HYDERABAD: It was in 2002 that M. Jayanth Reddy, a full time real estate businessman, pondered over something many martial arts experts in the country might have contemplated umpteen times earlier: why is it that it is only the Koreans, Japanese and Chinese who dominate the world of martial arts? Why not Indians?

Fortunately, unlike his contemporaries, the 48-year-old did not confine himself to his musings.

The spark of an idea today earned him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most roundhouse kicks executed in one minute.

On August 31 this year, Mr. Reddy, a fifth Dan taekwondo expert executed 171 kicks in one minute scripting his way into the Guinness Book. With this, he claimed to have broken all existing records in the one minute category. The previous record in his category was scored by a police officer Mark Scott (148), while another Bernald Robinson executed 159 kicks in the swift inner edge category.

âIt involves a lot of endurance and practice,â he said. âThese are not feather touch kicks. They are full impact kicks.â

Just to give this newspaper an idea of the amount of practice that had gone into bagging this record, Mr. Reddy explained how he had to go on a three hour routine everyday. âFrom February to August, I have approximately practiced 3 lakh kicks, which is about the same number I had done throughout my 33 years in this field.â

Passion

What began as a fascination to inspire awe from his friends with some cool stunts transmuted into a passion for martial arts.

And, when taekwondo was recognised by the International Olympic Committee in 1980, the black belt in karate took to it.

âAt that time, it was only karate and kung fu. Since I was interested in fly kicks, I thought why not taekwondo.â

Then on it has been quite a journey for Mr. Reddy as his love for the art took him from Hyderabad to Bangalore to USA, UK and even Korea where he would âbeg, borrow or stealâ techniques from various masters.

Presidential awards

He has also received Presidential Sports Awards from two U.S. presidents -- George HW Bush and Bill Clinton.

So, is he content now? âI am looking at increasing the duration, say maximum number of kicks in one hour or six hours. I am not decided yet.â
