He put the phone down and stared at the eighth floor French window. It would take just a couple of seconds to open that window and jump out. A free fall later his head would hit the hard concrete and he would be history. Most likely he would not experience any pain. Death would be more or less instantaneous. He would not have to worry about the phone call he had just had or the gargantuan expectations on him that he apparently could not meet. He sat in front of his compute; opened Google and typed in a search string: "Can a person be a total failure in both professional as well as personal life?" He knew Google would not understand his plight. But he had to get it out of the system. He needed to see it physically - the words "failure in both professional as well as persona life." It was an accurate description of his life. The last promotion he had was six years ago. People whom he led in the office were leading him now. He knew the reasons. He knew it was not due to any injustice meted out to him. It was a simple but unbearable fact - He simply did not have it in him to succeed. His personal life gave his professional life a run for its money in the race to be the worst failure part of his life. His wife hated him because he would shout at her. He would lose control of his senses and get into a verbal dual with her on the flimsiest grounds possible. It was probably inferiority complex or perhaps pure hypertension! Whatever the reason, he often took her for granted. She had patiently put up with him through his tantrums hoping against hope that he would change one day and become a pleasant personality. Old habits die hard. She knew that. He knew that too. A day before, an argument ensued and he ended shouting at her again. This time she lost her cool and told him in no nonsense terms that she would not accept it anymore; that he was a ******* and he should do whatever he wanted to do because she simply did not care anymore. It was after this altercation that he had realized the excruciating fact of his life. Failure in both aspects of it. His professional life - dead. His personal life - he had just killed it. He had already committed hara-kiri by then for all practical purposes. A cooked vegetable he was - drowning in self-pity with an ever increasing urge to inflict physical pain upon himself. He looked at the French window again. An eight floor drop - hard concrete - instant death - very very inviting. He looked at the Google results page. There was nothing worth reading there. "Am I depressed?" He asked himself. Then he entered the same into the Google search box. The first result was an online test to gauge his depression levels. He took the test and scored Moderate to High-Moderate in all sections - Major Depression, Dysthymia, Bipolar Disorder, Cyclothymia, SAD... He smiled. He was in self-denial. It was depression that was causing him to behave this way. It was not his fault. It was just a medical condition. There was a knock on the door. He rushed to it. Maybe it was his wife. Maybe she put it all behind her. Maybe she would give him another chance. "Good morning Venu" the middle-aged doctor greeted him warmly. Venu's face fell. "Not a good morning doctor." He sat on the bed. The doctor nodded. "I see you have answered my next question as well." "I am a total failure" Venu blurted out, "Personal life is in shambles. Professional life is going nowhere. I need to jump off that window." "This too shall pass, Venu" the doctor examined him thoroughly. "Nothing very unusual. Blood pressure within limits. Have you been taking the medication?" Venu did not reply. The doctor shook his head. "You should let us help you Venu. I promise a better life at the end of this road. Just take the pills and follow the instructions." "I need.. need.. I need to ap.. apologize to my.. to my.. my wife" Venu was stuttering. The doctor did not react for a moment. Then he patted on Venu's back. "Look. I will give you something to rest. We will talk about your wife when you wake up." He injected a sedative and watched Venu drift away into deep sleep. Then he closed the door and locked it. Venu had an eighty percent chance of committing suicide within the next two years. The mental makeup test results were extremely disturbing. Venu's mind had lost its capability to think rationally. But today, Venu entered a one-way street. Hallucinations meant that his mind had degenerated further. The psychologist wrote the following entries in Venu's case sheet: "Imagines a wife and an altercation with her. Imagines a non-existent window in his room. Talks about a professional life that he had never had. Blood pressure of 160 by 110. Heart rate 100. God bless him." Then he shut his computer, waved goodbye to the receptionist and left "National Institute of Mental Health", a three storeyed building in the northwest suburbs of Chennai.
