Was an interesting read for me.

We had been planning for Dr. JP's visit to our constituency for a long time, we could not get a right cause to invite him until we came across the problems of palm oil farmers who are under great stress due to the fall of palm oil prices, as the import of palm oil from other countries without any protection to local farmers increased after the free trade agreement with ASEAN countries came into effect especially after 2009.

The date was fixed on 7th November 2010. We initially got the whole day but some how there was another program at Andhra Loyola College, Vijayawada for which JP could not deny the invitation. Thus we got his time after 1:30. He came to Gannavaram office, palm oil farmers, some of the palm oil farmer's association members and party members like me greeted him with much enthusiasm. Even his school teachers came in and one of them taught mathematics to young JP. JP sir recalled his time he had with his school teachers and told us how they used to fight with each other in school days over mathematics problems. The program was to have lunch and to start off to the villages where the palm oil farmers problems are so acute.

He eats very little just enough to keep the soul and body together and I approached him when he was about to complete his lunch to seek his time for few minutes to express my anguish over higher education and research in our country he promptly promised I would get his time during the tour. After few minutes of rest we started off, meanwhile he gave some time for photo session with party members. Though I had no interest(I did not want to disturb him like every admirer) earlier to have photograph with him, this time I decided to have a snap with him and I did, you can see it in my orkut profile photos.

Initially Dr.JP visited a palm oil crushing unit in a nearby village called Ampapuram. Staff at the factory were aware of his arrival and quite enthusiastic to explain the processes involving in the plant. Next journey was to a village called Veluru, its my home town where I was born and stayed in my childhood. He was greeted by all the elderly men in the village. Donnavalli Gurnadam who donated 20 acres of land(worth at least some Rs. 30-40 lakh an acre) to Navyodaya school also attended the meeting, he normally avoids political meetings but attended this meeting and was introduced to JP. As usual JP sir inquired about the price. Donavalli Gurnadam expressed his desire to donate another 10 acres of his land to any worthwhile project from the government and waiting for it. JP sir interacted with local farmers and gave mic to every possible speaker. Finally he spoke. He expressed appreciation to Donavalli Gurnadam's gesture and asked the farmers to be united, leave all the differences among them and expressed his inability to spend more time with them.

Next stop was a farm field where the farmers cut down their palm oil tress and threw them on the road in some cases farmers did not even remove them from their fields as they could not have the resources to do so. JP sir stepped down in a field where the farmer was waiting for him. He interacted with him for few minutes and asked him why he had not removed the tree logs from the field. Farmer did not cry but its visible in his eyes and spoke very painfully about his owes to do farming and his daily problems with his wife who was nagging him for planting palm oil in the field.

Then its the turn for journalists, everybody posed a sensible question. Dr. JP replied with calm and ease. Finally one journalist asked him what he thinks of Obama's tour in India. JP sir laughed at him for his mindless timing of the question. Actually I shouted at him(of course in a mild voice) for his absent mindedness. The very next day, one news paper wrote this episode in a negative light as JP was impatient to journalists(guess what, its none other than Sakshi news paper).

Next stop was Palleralmudi village. By the time we reach this village its already late but the gathering was quite high this time. Again its not leader giving speeches rather its interactive session where JP speaks finally. Next stop was Gangannagudem, this is in another district. Its a tough journey. Again the same process.

Final stop was Denduluru, quite notorious for money politics. Here a farmer who attended to Allagappa committee(which was constituted by the central government long back to look into the farming issues) spoke which was very nice and he appreciated JP's non political visit(we were not wearing any party symbols or shouting any slogans) to their village and wished him all the best in his solemn resolve to fight the corruption in public life. Here JP sir spoke for 34 minutes(so sure because I recorded it in my mobile). This was really stunning speech of the day. He highlighted how the price rise to farmer not necessarily mean price rise to consumers and how the minimum support to the rice can be raised to Rs.1600 per 100 Kg. He also highlighted how the disunity among the farmers was ruining them.

When the meeting was over its 8:30, its time to reach railway station and have dinner before boarding the train, for me its time to catch his time. I approached local district president regarding this. He warmly welcomed me to his car which accompanied JP sir vehicle. We reached a guest house where we had our dinner. After the dinner its my time before the arrival of some local journalists.

I spoke with him intermittently as there were many interruptions. I started with medical colleges and universities in Andhra Pradesh and requested him to add the subject to party's manifesto next time, he nodded. He explained how sudden expansion was an impossible task in Andhra Pradesh by quoting all the facts with numbers and also shared his experience with Montek Singh Ahulwalia(deputy to the planning commission chief, Prime Minister) who had absolutely no idea about the ground realities Here JP sir meant he studied in the best colleges in Indian and continued his studies in one of the best universities in the world so obviously he had not seen worst in India where as Manmohan Singh knew all these problems as he himself faced them. He explained how the idea of Knowledge Commission came up in their discussion and I also realized that its Dr. JP who asked them to invite Sam Pitroda to head the commission. He also shared his recent conversation with the state governor regarding appointing new vice chancellors to the state run universities, he suggested non Telugus as vice chancellors for which governor expressed his inability to do so.

We started off to railway station to catch the Godavri Express, which is notorious for its late arrival. That day it was 40 minutes late(daily its 20 minutes late). During our journey to the railway station we continued our discussion. Dr. JP explained how the 1000 year old Jewish intellectual traditions sustained universities in European countries and asked me how can we compete with them as we have hardly any institution that can be compared with in the last 100 years. Also shared his childhood experiences like how he went to get the chloroform from the local doctor to bisect a frog and also how one of his teachers came with Rs.10,000 donation at the time of election.

He went inside the station master room to give an interview to local journalists and we were waiting outside the room. Many youngsters were eagerly waiting for JP sir to get an autograph and to have a word with him but we insisted not to disturb the video interview.

Finally its time to depart, we started towards the platform no.3 where he had to board the Godavari Express. Meanwhile I got few more minutes time. I inquired how could not feel the tiredness of the total tour(virtually we were running after him while he was walking) he replied back how could we change the country if we feel tired for a simple tour like this. I expressed my admiration for him by saying his speech at the annual meeting was like a hero inspiring his companions before they start their fight with the giants like in Hollywood movies, he simply laughed at this remark.

He inquired how the standards are at Loyola college, Vijaywada(both of us being the old students of this college) right now for which I pointed out that the government stopped its aid to retiring lecturers and this burden has to be shared by the students. He gave an example how this aid in the form of lecturer's salaries was not helpful to the institutes like Loyola. He expressed his dislike for the current education at graduation levels for their lack of multidisciplinary approach. Our discussion turned on Left party government in West Bengal, while he was quite appreciative of both Mamata and Budhadev, he criticized both for their lack of forward thinking and expressed his damn dislike for Mamata and said West Bengal would be totally ruined if she came to power. We also drifted into Bihar politics while he expressed his dislike for the political parties and their political cultures and he was ok with Nitish Kumar. Meanwhile I came to know he was totally unaware of the benefits that come along with his MLA status and had an argument with one of his attendants regarding this and for the first time I saw JP had to concede a defeat in a argument, of course its no way concerned with any public issue.

Finally he boarded the train, its time to leave the place. We waited till the train departed from the station. Its over all great experience for me. I cherish this day for a long time to come. My family has never been in politics until he started the party. I never saw a leader who is intellectually challenging to youth(obviously youngsters like to compete with the best in knowledge) yet so humble to listen to the people. If he had been still in the service(Indian Administrative Service) he might have been grabbed away by the UN for some of its challenging organizations. His vision and his courage are visible in his eyes while he speaks on public related issues.

I decided to walk with him in his struggle in one way or the other. Its also inspiring while interacting with local leaders who are as courageous as JP but facing heavy adds to work for the party. District president and other members were all in their late 60s or early 70s, one leader had at least 7 fractures in his body but he said he would work for the party till his last breath. Its also saddening to know from them that it became very difficult to attract youngsters to work full time for the party, they did not express anger but shared anguish how they could sustain the party in the long run.
