Chavan's mother Pramilakaki has been a Congress Member of Parliament for several years. She died before the flat could be allotted to her, so it was given to Chavan instead. When asked if he would surrender it, Chavan said he was thinking of doing that.

Galgali said this could turn out to be an embarrassment as Chavan had claimed an annual income of only Rs 76,000 while buying the flat.

Galgali also alleged that the government took only three days to clear Chavan's documents. "Documents show that after the Urban Development Department's initial letter, Chavan submitted his documents for approval on May 17, 2003. Surprisingly, the additional collector and the competent authority wrote back just three days later, on May 20, 2003, saying that the flat had been allotted," said Galgali.

Referring to Indresh Kumar's alleged involvement in the blast he said, "We have several instances of the RSS, VHP and Bajrang Dal men involved in the violent activities since 1992. The RSS must introspect; there are fringe elements who believe in violent means."

"Why did the BJP government not investigate the murder of a VHP leader Sunil Joshi, who was closely related to Indresh Kumar," he wanted to know. "It is now being probed by the CBI."

When asked how the Congress could explain the dichotomy of the lack of progress among the minorities, he said the government was aware of the concerns among the minorities and would ensure the developmental gap.
