Congress Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Y S R Reddy launched rice at Rs2 a kg scheme in the state. And the Congress leaders in Karnataka too in their election manifesto highlights announced rice at Rs2 a kg scheme. 18.7 million families below poverty line (BPL) having ration cards will be entitled to YSR’s largesse of 20 kg of subsidised rice every month supplied through government-run fair price shops. The Congress leaders in Karnataka intends to outdo YSR by offering a higher quantum of 25 kg of rice at Rs2 a kg to all BPL ration car holders. They have also offered free colour television sets to all BPL families and loans to farmers at three percent interest. The congress leaders of both states are eyeing the Assembly elections due next month in Karnataka and next year in Andhra Pradesh. It is an irony of Indian democracy that whatever may be the economic or social issues dominating the agenda of political parties, a sudden rise in onion prices in North India or an offer of rice at Rs2 in the South can still make or unmake a government. The potential of rice to tilt the electoral balance was first discovered by the DMK founder late C N Annadurai whose promise of `one padi’(about 1.5kg) rice at Re1 brought him to power in the 1967 elections. The present DMK patriarch and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi lived up to that tradition by offering Rice at Rs2 per kg to all ration card holders in the State in the last Assembly elections. He also offered goodies like free colour television for every family and free gas stove to all poor women. And Karunanidhi came back to power with a thumbing majority. In Andhra, it was former Chief Minister N T Rama Rao who first launched the Rs 2a kg rice scheme which paid rich electoral dividends for him in the 1994 polls. After him, N Chandrababu Naidu increased the price to Rs 3.50 a kg. The YSR government had increased the price to Rs 5.25 per kg after it came to power, and the same is being offered now for Rs 2 per kg. Rice is being offered at fancy prices by the Congress in Andhra and Karnataka when the open market prices rule between Rs12 and Rs20. The moot question is should the government focus on improving the living conditions of the poor or simply harp on their minimal needs? In states were rice was introduced at fancy prices, there were reports of large scale black marketing and diversion of rice from PDS to the open market. The governments of the day failed to curb corruption and plug the leakages. Such populist measures were introduced without making adequate provision in the Budgets. Consequently, the freebies led to huge budgetary deficits and rise in inflation, which contributed to further rise in prices in the open market. CHild labour ante saana pedda story we can have a separate thread. I have met a girl back in my India trip who does household chores... while going to school. I asked her why she does.... her story was whatever her parents earn is not affordable for her parents to run the family. I do not want her to work at my home initially then I realized if I do that then she will lose her earning and goto another house for the same job. India lo father okkare untaaru... and all the girl does was sweep the rooms and clean 2 or 3 utensils max. (maa father stopped eating rice long back... so he gets everything from hotel). All I could help that girl was give money liberally. Per day $75-100 icchevaadini as long as I was there in India. I personally know that child labour is wrong but was helpless to stop her doing the same. Legality kanna maanavatvam addu vacchindi. | ||

Neeku idea undo ledho... do you know how much money you paid for gas cylinder back in India? I believe even then you had atleast 1 decent earning person at home. Why did you go for subsidized price? Rs 2 /Kg isthe akkada ne tax money as is ga vaaduthara? Ala ela anukunnavu brother.... Central govt will bear part of subsidy and rest by state government. This is smilar to reservations, the govt does not have will to provide better basic education facilities etc to deprived sections so that they can compete, it inturn chooses an easy way out which is to spoon feed by increasing reservations. This is not party specific but a general case | ||

I saw TV news yesterday, so many poor people were happy with this scheme. For a moment, i realised how quickly i forgot that so many poor people are in india. When TDP came up with this scheme, the avg rice price was Rs 3 per kg, govt ki one rupee bokka. Now, the avg price per kg is Rs 18 anta, antay govt ki Rs 16 bokka. Also, this scheme will benefit so many more people than in 1985. Whatever the reasons behind this sudden decisions, poor people will benefit this decision. Aakaliki, party tho sambandham ledhu. Hats of YSR! |
