Has maize merchant Thota Kanna Rao bit off more than what he could chew by paying a whopping Rs 27 crore for the Telugu rights of 'Robot' for Andhra Pradesh? From the trade atmosphere prevailing in the Telugu film industry at the moment, it appears that the new entrant into the industry has unwittingly pushed himself to the corner. The agriculturist from Yarnagudem village of Devarapalli mandal in West Godavari stunned everyone in Tollywood by clinching a deal with Sun Pictures which produced Rajnikant and Aishwarya Rai-starrer 'Robot' for an unbelievable sum of Rs 27 crore. The big question is: Can the money be recovered? Kanna Rao who is the proprietor of Sri Krishna Traders reportedly made huge money in maize trade and suddenly took the plunge into film trade business when notable names, perhaps for strategic or economic reasons, stayed away from having anything to do with 'Robot'. That Kanna Rao himself is now wary about what kind of business 'Robot' would do, is clear from the fact that he requested distributors and exhibitors to contact him at a hotel room in Rajahmundry in order to have a deal to buy the film directly from him, to be exhibited. "Director Shankar has always delivered hits and the film has a big star cast. I saw interesting clips of the movie and felt I should buy the rights," Kanna Rao said in the city recently. But there are some hard facts that Rajni & Co. are now faced with and which Thota Kanna Rao will have to deal with. 'Robot' produced at a cost of Rs 160 crore will be released worldwide, including in Andhra Pradesh, on October 1 but exhibitors, at least in the Nizam territory comprising Hyderabad and Telangana areas from where the major revenue comes from, do not know who has brought the distribution rights for this region. Generally, for such big flicks, the distribution rights are sold at least a month in advance and all the theatres are booked for that particular movie. Tollywood trade sources also pointed out that most 'A' grade theatres (with good facilities) everywhere in the state were already booked for the release of Mahesh Babu-starrer 'Khaleja' which is set for release on October 7. It is also learnt that apart from some 'A' grade theatres and most 'B' grade theatres have also been booked for the release of Jr NTR-starrer 'Brindavanam' which will release on October 8 - just a day after 'Khaleja'. Since Mahesh Babu is coming up with a film after three years, there is a lot of craze for his movie. However, with economic sense prevailing over emotions, producer 'Dil' Raju decided to go ahead with the release of 'Brindavanam' though it would clash with 'Khaleja'. Tollywood sources say since both 'Khaleja' and 'Brindavanam' have been made with a budget of Rs 30 crore to Rs 40 crore, it would be better to space out the films' release dates so that neither film suffers commercially. Though most film releases are planned with this in mind, it has not been possible this time as any delay in the release would mean that the producer incurs heavy interest. "It is always ideal to space out big releases but this is a peculiar situation we are faced with now. There are three big budget releases and there is hardly any space between them," said M Vijayendar Reddy, President, Hyderabad State Film Chamber of Commerce. And where does that leave 'Robot' In The Face Of Competition From Two Big Even if it were to release just a week in advance on October 1, it would have to be removed from several theatres to make way for either 'Khaleja' or 'Brindavanam'. If that is the situation that 'Robot' is faced with, will the man who bought the Telugu rights for Andhra Pradesh be able to get back his money? Kanna Rao has bought an expensive film but has he made a costly mistake? The verdict will be out in a week. | ||
