KARNATAKA PARISTHITHI Enthiran will singe you Distribution rights shoot up to Rs 10 cr, viewers will have to shell out three to four times more for tickets The Karnataka rights for Rajinikanth's Enthiran - Robot in Hindi and Telugu - have just got costlier. Bangalore Mirror had first reported the sale at Rs 8.5 crore, the highest for a non-Kannada film in the state. But it has now reached Rs 10 crore with the distributors being forced to buy the rights for the Hindi version too along with the Tamil and Telugu ones. But the real problem for the film's distributor is the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce's (KFCC) restriction on screening the film - in all three languages - at more than 24 theatres. "In Bangalore alone, there is demand from 60 theatres to release the film. But in the entire state, I can release it in only 24 theatres. I have submitted a request to the KFCC to relax the rules. When Big Pictures released Raavan in 60 theatres, KFCC could not do anything. But they control us because we are locals. Kannadigas are not allowing Kannadigas to make money," said producer/distributor Mohan Kumar, who has bought the distribution rights along with three others. However, the Film Chamber, which is fighting a case against Big Pictures for violating its 24-screen restriction on non-Kannada films, is unlikely to allow Enthiran to be released in more theatres. "If one person is given permission, it will lead to a revolt. Just because someone has invested heavily on one film, the Chamber cannot change its rules," said a KFCC functionary. The distributors in Karnataka had first purchased the rights for releasing the Tamil and Telugu versions of the film. But, according to sources, when Gemini Pictures released an advertisement that they were going to release the Hindi version across India, Mohan and his team bought the rights for releasing the Hindi version in south India for an additional Rs 1.5 crore. "Producer Sun Pictures have faxed a letter saying it was a mistake and Gemini has only rights for north India," they said. However, most of the Rajini fans in the city may not be able to watch the film in the opening weekend or in the first few weeks. The film will be released on Oct 1, and if the 24-screen rule is strictly followed, only a few theatres in Bangalore will be able to screen the film. RISKY INVESTMENT Senior producer-distributor-exhibitor N Kumar said Enthiran would have to run at peak collections (70 per cent plus ticket sales) for 100 days in all 24 theatres to recover the investment made for its distribution in Karnataka. "At the current admission costs, it will not be easy to recover that kind of investment. No film, even that of Rajinikanth, has run 100 days in all theatres it was released in. If the film fails like Baba, everyone will lose," he said. But the real trouble is for the audience. "Every theatre releasing Enthiran will increase the admission rates. Sources said at Pallavi (a single screen theatre), the cost of the balcony ticket will rise to Rs 200 from Rs 70. In multiplexes, the cost will go as high as Rs 750 and Rs 2,000 for Gold Class. This is the time for the commercial tax department and the Film Chamber to step in and stop this trend," Kumar said. Sources in a few other cinema halls also said the managements were contemplating a steep hike in admission rates for Enthiran. "Public interest is being com promised in all this talk about the huge cost and hype.
