Chiru getting restless to launch his party TIMES NEWS NETWORK Hyderabad: Frenetic activities are on in the Chiranjeevi camp to register a political party very quickly. This is even as Allu Aravind, the mega star’s brother-inlaw and main strategist is holding discussions with a cross section of people inviting them to join the proposed new party. Though no firm date has been announced by the film idol’s camp for launching the party, most analysts now believe that it would be on April 7. Analysts said that the people that Aravind has been talking to not only include politicians across the spectrum but also diverse professionals. Chiranjeevi campsters are tightlipped about the party name and the symbol it would adopt, but analysts point out that the mega star would not have any control over the party symbol. As per rules of the Election Commission (EC), a party is allotted a symbol on the basis of its past electoral performance. This means that a new party is given no new symbol. However, as a matter of strategy what new parties do is to advice all its candidates to adopt the same symbol, from free symbols listed by the Election Commission. This way most of the candidates of a new party can stand on a common symbol platform. “As per EC norms, if two candidates, one an independent and another a representative of a registered political party apply for the same symbol, then the latter gets precedence,” a legal analyst said. Other analysts point out that usually around 80 per cent of the candidates of a new but registered party are able to get a common symbol. There are 67 symbols on the free list of the EC, which any independent or candidates from registered but unrecognised (read new) party can choose from. The symbols are numerous and include diverse ones ranging from almirah, box, basket, bangles, carrot, cot and jug to letter box, kettle, kite, road roller, saw, scissors and violin, wool and whistle. But the sun, which some say is Chiranjeevi’s preferred choice is not there in the list. “Chiranjeevi’s men will have to choose from these 67 symbols,” analysts pointed out. Senior TD leader making moves to join Chiru party Hyderabad: With the possibility of megastar Chiranjeevi announcing the name and symbol of his new party this month, senior TDP leader from West Godavari district K Vidyadhar Rao is preparing to quit and join the proposed new party. When asked for his comments by a group of media men on Thursday, Rao did not deny it and said that he would take a decision after due consultations with his party workers. To a question on whether he is quitting the TDP and joining Chiranjeevi’s proposed party, Rao reiterated that he was yet to give a thought to it. “I don’t take any decision without consulting the party workers. Chiranjeevi is yet to come out openly. Why make a noise now?” was all that he said. In reply to another question on whether he thought that Chiranjeevi’s entry into politics would have a great impact in East and West Godavari districts, Rao said, “why only East and West Godavari, it will have impact across the state.” TDP, however, feels that none of its senior leaders including Vidyadhar Rao will quit the party. In case Chiranjeevi floats a new political party, TDP sources say that only those who fear that they might not get ticket in the next elections might think of joining another party. Rao, a Velama and an important TDP leader from Chintalpudi in West Godavari district, was a minister in the TDP government. Rao lost the polls in 2004 and was later appointed party’s official spokesperson. There are also rumours that another senior leader from Guntur district, Kodela Sivaprasada Rao, is also likely to quit the party and join the proposed new outfit of Chiranjeevi. But Kodela clarified to the TDP high command that he does not have any such |
