Query on 140 does not hamper the GC process at all, which is your friend's case and he can continue to do whatever he is doing right now... Only in case when 140 is rejected,it would void the underlying GC process... Shifting on EAD means, using the EAD on I-9 form as the basis of employment when you work for an employer other than the one who filed your GC. Regarding whether to use H1 or EAD...H1 is safer, in case your GC process becomes void. EAD is simpler to use, which doesn't require to file H1.
