I watched the game between India and Pakistan at Hyderabad (india). I remember very well that Mohd Shahid holding 5 pakistani defenders for 90 seconds. This Pakistan team had the likes of Hassan Sardar, Kaleemullah You can never see a better display of the art of hockey than that one. Later they switched to Astro Turf, but we cannot use it as an excuse anymore. Since we have Astro turf in many grounds. I know for sure the Police stadium in Begumpet was made Astro turf. I used to practice with few folks who played Junior Nationals in around 1986 or so in Nepal. And their aim was mostly to get into a Public Sector firm and settle down. His brother used to work for Allwyn and he was "settled"( as in Rangeela) and so no motivation to practice I think that is how the game would have initially started deteriorating. | ||

Indian National game is Hockey, indian govt should build astro turfs, nice facilities, give monetary help to players. in late 80's, when India had 2 astro turfs, a small nation like Holland had 400 astro turfs. Doordharshan should telecast hockey games live. TV lo, poddhuna lesthey, film quiz'z, cricket quiz's laanti programs vasthaay. Well, if people are more interested in cricket/movies/politics all the time, govt cant do much either anyway. | ||

3-4 years back India had won Asia cup in Hockey captain Dhanraj Pillai one of the best hockey players in the world, airport lo diguthe receive cheskotaniki yavaru raledu, his 4 yr old son came with a garland vadu yedichesi na koduku ni nenu hockey adadu ani chepanu annadu. He gave interviews asking people to donate balls to help the hockey team practice. Mana Hockey ee stage lo ravatani ki one of the main reasons is the move from Grass to Astro turf, Grass suits Indian style of hockey better while Astro turf suits the europeons | ||

Pavala hater, Historically, hockey and soccer players are not treated well at all. Most of these players aim/goal in playing these games is, represent a state/country, get the job in the sports reservation quota. in early 90's, there is a hockey player called Mohd. Shahid. His dribbling was the best in the world at that time. He used to bring so many penalty corners to india, with his dribbling skills in the D. When his 5 yr daughter got sick, indian govt did not help him even with a penny. He has to stop playing hockey to take care of her daughter (ultimately she died later). There were so many players, state ki respesent chesay varaku, sarainaa shoes kooda undayvi kaavu. Pargat singh, dhanraj Pillai, Mukesh kumar etc etc were world class players. But, today, they can't afford to buy a decent home in a city like Hyd. cricketers? Ishant Sharma, Kumar are richer than any indian hockey player, who played 100 hockey matches for india. | ||
