Stock splits have no impact on the valuation of a firm.
a) Probably the base was inflated to begin with - have you considered that. It is not like before Covid, valuations were reasonable b) Amazon stock fell 95% from 1999 to 2001 and did not recover its 1999 price till 2009, even though it must have grown 20 times. Markets can overshoot on the upside and the downside. Market padithe inthe padali inthakanna padakoodadhu ani vundadhu. We don't ask those questions when the market rises, kadha c) When the broad market corrects, it drags down some well performing stocks too in the mayhem - that is the best time to pick those stocks d)

When economic activity all over the world is slowed/almost halted... and equities are tearing up growing 90% in span of an year, with absolute disregard to fundamentals.. 90% and 50% down is absolutely expected.. Not much surprise there.. Growth stocks are always risky bets due to inconsistencies in their valuations.. In my opinion, most of us have no business investing in individual stocks. we are not equipped to handle them. I made this point subtly when the stocks were going bonkers during past several months.. That said .. it is not all doom and gloom. There is no structural damage to economic activity. I still have positive outlook on general economic activity. What we are seeing is part of some external environmental exceptions.... Stock market is a whole different story. It is dependent on the investor mindset, which is never consistent and is unpredictable. | ||

Am confused. Which part of the current market movement was not expected...it surely wasn't the money printing -> inflation -> rate hikes -> steep equity correction. I can understand that the 2008 crisis or the 2000 crisis could not have been estimated by many. But even a dumbo like me would know that that the post-Covid relentless printing, rate hikes were a given. So investors all acting that the goldilocks scenario will continue is just carelessness. That apart, i have started investing in the US markets from India, last August 2021. My first lot were boring pharma stocks, as i was wary of frothier sectors. The pharma stocks have done well and recently entered some semi conductor stocks because they are available at great values. My XIRR since August last is 24%. Not to boast, i am sure that this will come down and i might enter negative also. But as long as there is a strong moat, good entry values and cash flows, just invest and forget. In fact i suggest everyone to have a sizeable exposure to the US markets - a) you will diversify away from the long arms of the Indian govt (if we end up like a Sri Lanka) and b) Indian markets have long been overvalued and still are, but without underlying growth c) keep a pool in US for kids education etc. | ||
