Yes..but do you know what Govt has been doing to check this issue ? Take example of mobile phones.Till last few years all phones are imported and even after duties,the imports never slowed down.So govt came up with policy of reducing duties on mobile phone components and increased on imported phones by 100% So ,it is cheaper to import all parts of mobile phones individually at around 5 to 10% duty ,rather than paying 100% duty on fully manufactured phone .So companies took advantage of it and started mobile phone assembly units in India Then Govt slowly made another move.It started raising duties duties of mobile phone parts which are of low value and can be easily made in India (like outer shells ,batteries etc)..Now it has come to a stage that Govt has increased duties of 80% mobile components except some critical parts like Mobile screens,processor and some parts are imported and all other parts are manufactured in India.In coming years even the remaining parts will be manufactured in India and billions of dollars saved ,lakhs of Jobs created.Even companies like samsung and Xiaomi are planningto export phones from India | ||

They announce these during the budget. In the end, Indian citizens are going to pay. if you have local industries, I can understand but all parts made outside of the country. | ||

Taxes are different from duties Import Duties are to check trade balances.Duties are built into the cost of product. If there are less duties ,then cheap imports will be flood into market there by killing local Manufacturing and also loss to forex as the importers send forex out of the country form Govt reserves If your imports overtake exports,then there will trade deficit ,followed by reduced balance of payments which weakens the currency further Check whats happening with Pakistan, with 30 billion imports and 13 billion exports every year | ||

Yes,India has right to tax to balance CAD Why do we waste foreign exchange importing Harley Davidson's ? To discourage such wasteful luxury items,India imposes 2005 duties on such things..and most times there will be zero or min import duties on essential items which are non available /manufactured in India | ||
