The Congress ‘betrayal of Telangana’ campaign against Mr Rao’s TRS was so strong, that when Congress candidates were not finalized to campaign, common pe .. As talks got delayed and entangled in seemingly irreconcilable claims, the People’s Front (Praja Kutami) looked a bad strategy, even as TRS made quick strides. The final settlement, with Congress contesting 94 seats and the TDP 13 was ensured a few weeks before the polling date, leaving little time for campaign. This turned a blessing in disguise for Congress. While rebels in TRS who did not get tickets went against the party, the candidates too spent their money early. There was Dusherra and Diwali since I got the ticket. I had to spend. It has put a huge financial pressure on not just me, but several TRS candidates," a mid-stature leader told me. |

after dissolving the Telangana Assembly prematurely on September 6, without a convincing rationale, Telangana Rasthtra Samithi (TRS) boss and chief minister K Chandrasekhara Rao thundered that he would win over 100 seats (out of 119), hoping a divided opposition caught unawares would make it a self-fulfilling prophesy. Chief Minister Rao’s strategy, and calculations, were sound indeed. The two principal parties opposing him in the State, the Congress and the BJP, could never come together. The weakened Telugu Desam Party, largely discredited in Telangana as an ‘Andhra party’, would further split the anti-incumbency vote in its few pockets of strength, especially in Hyderabad, and the government could laugh its way to the vote banks. A few things, as Murphy would observe, went wrong, upsetting KCR’s cart, or car, his party’s electoral symbol. The elections were not announced and completed by at most mid-November as Mr Rao would have estimated. The Election Commission announced the schedule, the polling in Telangana was set for December 7, making the 3-months window, a long time in politics. |
