Just curious - was it just his exclusion of WA from social networks that you disagreed with or his rationale in the article ?

random about that social network stuff. I have a beef with that guy - got into some arguments on twitter sometime back. :-) just think not the right person. WSJ has far better tech journos. even WaPo ..

“. It is mostly a bare-bones texting app in which most conversations are private and unmediated by any kind of algorithm meant to amp up engagement. This design means WhatsApp has little control over what content takes off and what doesnt; in most cases, the company cannot even see what is happening on WhatsApp, because the service encrypts messages automatically.”

Madhwapathi

What is the meaning of your ID? Just curious...

And i agree with your take on WA
Don't say you don't have enough time. You have exactly the same number of hours per day that were given to Helen Keller, Pasteur, Michaelangelo, Mother Teresea, Leonardo da Vinci, Thomas Jefferson, and Albert Einstein

Madhwapathi:

Depends on what you define as a social networking platform.

my definition is clear. what do YOU define one as? :-)

tech journalist not knowing that whatsapp is a social network and not just a random messaging service is funny.

Bushu:

whatsapp is not a social network.

Depends on what you define as a social networking platform.

WhatsApp is obviously different from Facebook/Instagram/Twitter in that you can't follow someone arbitrarily on WhatsApp. You have to be either in a group or in a 1:1 conversation thread to interact on the platform. Unlike Facebook/Instagram/Twitter - there are NO public posts. All messages are encrypted and visible within the group only.

WhatsApp is a messaging service and NOT a social network from that point of view.

Having said that, if you define social network as a service where 2 or more people exchange information, yes - WA becomes a social network. Farhad Manjoo is probably subscribing to the first school of thought. That's fine - It doesn't mean he and NYT are tech illiterates.

this is true right, Whatsapp uses e2e encryption (uses Signal protocol)

of course. but the bigger picture is this guy's claim that whatsapp is not a social network. can't get dumber.

in brazil, whatsapp banned thousands of suspicious accounts. sure impact on the election scenario there. same thing will happen in India.
