Filmbuff:

Overall the economic scenario is going to be painful for the next year or more.

Today rupee is reaching 74, almost there. Market down 600 points. Tomorrow RBI is going to increase rates by 25 bps or in a tough stance to control the rupee, might increase by 50 bps too. That will lead to a further correction in banking and finance stocks, consumer durables, real estate, auto stocks....in a nutshell, peanuts ammukovatam better inka.

instead of increasing the fuel prices and spend the additional mop up on god-knows-what, just imagine a scenario where the fuel prices were truly market determined and all this additional funds were in consumer's hands and not the governments.

The biggest counterfactual right now in the Indian economic scenario is this - instead of increasing the fuel prices and spend the additional mop up on god-knows-what, just imagine a scenario where the fuel prices were truly market determined and all this additional funds were in consumer's hands and not the governments. The additional savings for the consumers would have been spent on goods and services and squeeze out the excess output. That would have led in turn to companies spend on capital expenditure and investment and spurred the long stagnant investment scene in India.

Instead of depending on the market forces to increase demand and spur investment - the government is deciding on the winners and losers (like Ambani for instance). The coming of Jio has led to scores of thousands of job losses in the telecom sector.

We have missed out the last few years of global boom in exports (Vietnam and Bangladesh have reaped massive benefits) and are now left holding our balls in our hands. Now we have entered a protectionist environment and exports are unlikely to grow.

Overall the economic scenario is going to be painful for the next year or more.
