how old is your kid? - not trying to be nosy. Anyway - if first time living with a dog, pure breed is probably a good idea. otherwise i would have strongly suggested getting a pup from local shelter. Labs, German shepherds are a good fit with kids and Protection.. Golden retriever is also a good option, but they are not very "protective" . frankly, there are many breeds, that fit your criteria. I would suggest making your dog friendly in general. @teenmar - why do you want a pure breed? | ||

We have two 14 year old Shih Tzu's. Very sweet, loyal and smart. Be prepared to spend a good amount for grooming, especially if you want to keep them long haired. Like individuals they have their own personalities. One of our boys is eager to please and accepts us as the top dog, while the other one is moderately stubborn and manipulative. Overall, the best decision of our lives. Very hard to see them getting old, both started developing cataracts and one of them has severe arthritis and cannot take stairs or jump on furniture anymore. To keep away from genetic health issues go for crossbred or mutts. | ||

my friend has a labrador..english lab, not an amaerican one.....you can't go wrong with labs but if you are already a dog owner, lab may be too boring.. why don't you try great Pyrenees or other more independent, fun dogs | ||

Any dog Enthusiasts in DB ?? I have an Akita, Pure Japanese breed, It is almost 11 years old now, started showing old age symptoms. Planning to get a new dog before something happens to this one. I tried to breed this but did not find a right dog to pair up. Finding same breed was impossible. I do not want it to breed low.
