Thanks :-) Will definitely reach out before the trip - do you check your dB email ? Will PM you ...

As to the samadhi - that is not really a public haunt - we knew him personally, have learnt a lot from his discourses and wanted to pay my respects ..,

Next trip Rishikesh veyyali

North India lo temple visits antha waste pani unkoti undadhu, I have been to Rishikesh, loved the place. Waters are clean and green. I stayed at a place called Rainforest House, can't recommend it enough. Run by a firang and his desi wife. Some of the best food i have eaten on an Indian holiday. I would go there again just for the food. There is a rivulet that flows by the property which is great for young kids to roll around in.

There is no one temple that marks Rishikesh. Evo chinna chitaka temples untayi, that you can conveniently skip.

Went to all the jhulas, Ganga Aarthi, Haridwar, Beatles Ashram etc...but that food - do try the bendakaya fry, dal makhni, potato jeera, special home made bread is a bummer, you can skip that.

Anand_n:

Someone asked me to post an update in my RFI thread after the visit so here goes :

Previsit prep :

Almost a month ahead emailed Ramanasramam and requested accommodation - they gave us confirmation in a few days .

Closer to the date found out that they arrange taxis from Chennai airport as well so got that booked they them too... would have been cheaper from a commercial vendor but I just went with the ashram for the added confidence...since it was just my mom and me.

Also booked a guide online to trek up to Virupaksha cave - just because there were warnings posted about women doing it alone ..,

The visit -

Arrived in Chennai at 7.30 in the morning- cab was waiting for us. It was a 4 hour drive so reached at 11.45 just in time for lunch at the ashram..The food in the ashram is wonderful :-) it was cool to see the many foreigners , especially their kids totally comfortable sitting on the floor and eating off banana leaves :-)

After lunch , checked into the cottage ...
Note - they required passport copies and a photo each for foreign nationals...let my mom rest in the cottage ..

The guide showed up - after a slight delay and we drove up to the Arunachala Temple end of the trail up to Virupaksha Cave .. from there it was about a 30 min climb up - given my slow speed in the heat - for people with more slack in scheduling would definitely recommend doing it in the morning ! The cave is open 9 am to 4 pm.

Reached up there at 3 pm - took a few mins outside to cool off and get my breath back before going into the cave!
Took 45 mins to sit / meditate in the cave and then came back down ... the mango tree cave was closed as the caretakers were taking a nap ..so just checked it out from outside and left..,

Back at Ramanasramam the auto person who was going to take us on the Giri pradakshina suggested we go for abhishekam at Arunachaleshwara Temple that evening and do the Girivalam next morning ...

Worked out well as it was a special abhishekam - 2 hours between the two shrines - Shiva and Ammavaru - sitting up front as close to the deity as you can get ....as someone mentioned in the previous thread the Temple is really hot - its like a sauna :-)

got bucket loads of prasadam...pulihora and paravannam ...so bought paper plates gave it to watchman to distribute to the poor around Ramanasramam ..

Went back to ashram for dinner ...visited the shrines and samadhi hall in Ramanasramam and went back to the cottage for the night .

Next morning woke up early and went to old hall in Ramanasramam to spend some time there meditating ... would definitely recommend doing that to those inclined .. both Virupaksha cave and Old Hall are amazing spaces - I will leave it at that :-)

After breakfast, left Mom at the cottage to assimilate her experience at old hall and I went to Pavazha Kundru Temple ( she would not be able to make the 160 step climb ) ..for me this was a wish come true ... Pavazha Kundru is believed to be Gautama munis ashram and the the spot where Parvati Devi meditated before Shiva appeared and they unified into Ardhanarishwara... the temple itself opens only for random times so knew going up that it may be closed and it was ... my intent was to go and spend some time there which I did ..btw this is another of the spots Sri Ramana Maharshi meditated along with Virupaksha , Patala Linga and Skandashramam

Came back down - and then went on Giri pradakshina by auto - visiting the many shrines along the way ! This took us about 2 hours ...

Had lunch in Ramanasramam, made my donation to the ashram ( the acco and food is free and runs on donations which they do not solicit but are appreciated) and then left thiruvannamalai for the next destination ...

Totally lived up to the expectations I had going there - definitely went to go back and spend more relaxed time at Ramanasramam some time :-) the monkeys, the peacocks strutting around , the calm all add to a blissful experience of the space ! Must visit for those who are inclined to reflection ...:-)

Nice update.

:-) not surprising ... most people know about the Temple and Giri pradakshina, Ramana Maharshi readers know about his haunts , and a very few know about Pavazha Kundru which is why it’s fairly deserted ...

Based on your inclination it can be ritual and site hopping or a quiet, rejuvenating experience :-) Ramanasramam, Virupaksha, Pavazha kundru fall into the second category - esp if you do them solo..

Next trip Rishikesh veyyali - have wanted to go back there to visit Arsha Vidya ashram - now that I articulated it - have to plan it for summer :-)

budget breakup enduku, stay in ashram and food is free, donation is only optional, they dont force you to give. They server breakfast at 7Am, lunch at 11:30, evening tea, and dinner at 7:30pm

If you go giripradakshina in auto its 300-350, if in cab, its 500.

Arunachalam temple to ramanashram auto is around 60-80 rs.

Ashram limits stay to 3 nights. You cannot stay more than that.

Cab to Chennai is around 2500-3500Rs, one way. akkada nunchi mee ishtam

Superb andi,, Finally you got what you wanted. I was very reluctant to come back from Ramanashram. What a change that place will offer one who is willing to reflect. As you said, not only inside atmosphere, the outside too, with peacocks. thats really enchanting.

I find the discipline that you see in Ramanashram very rare, the only place I found that kind of discipline is in Chennai Ramakrishna Math. Everything perfect on dot.

I didnt have time to go to Pavazha Kundru Temple, but will go next time. I have made friends there in the ashram, they were very receptive.

Good to know you were able to attend the abhishekam of arunachala..

Worked out well as it was a special abhishekam - 2 hours between the two shrines - Shiva and Ammavaru - sitting up front as close to the deity as you can get ....as someone mentioned in the previous thread the Temple is really hot - it’s like a sauna :-)

got bucket loads of prasadam...pulihora and paravannam ...so bought paper plates gave it to watchman to distribute to the poor around Ramanasramam ..

Pavazha Kundru is believed to be Gautama muni’s ashram and the the spot where Parvati Devi meditated before Shiva appeared and they unified into Ardhanarishwara... the temple itself opens only for random times so knew going up that it may be closed and it was ... my intent was to go and spend some time there which I did ..btw this is another of the spots Sri Ramana Maharshi meditated along with Virupaksha , Patala Linga and Skandashramam
