my oldest macbook pro is 11 yrs old. they are built tough like chevies.

agreed. they are rock solid build. My oldest mackbooks (2 of them) are 2012 model.. super powerful and sturdy(my kids has abused them like a hell, but still they stood strong. I was having some thinkpads the 10 yeas before them, they are relatively sturdy (in Windows era) but not any more with Lenovo brand.

If you are considering Air, you should probably wait - A refresh of Air is right around the corner.

Jambalahaart_raja:

Macbook Air is just a glorified iPad

I disagree to agree.. while agreed that its full fledged MacOS computer(not IOS based iPad..) with all of the needs of a high school and entry college level student development needs. FYI, I have been using(typing from that only now) MB Air 8GB with 500GB HDD and i7 for my development work, Only when I run Parallels(with Win10) I feel some sluggish feel but for any routine development needs Air is not bad. But for a hardcore developer(who runs few servers, few IDEs, Virtual Machines, Some Media editing etc, Pro is recommended).

Jambalahaart_raja:

Previously 8 GB RAM could be upgraded by adding another 4 GB or another 8 GB

This is correct. The last model allowed such upgrade(not just RAM, HDD etc too) was 2012 Pro Non-retina. I own two of them. I have upgraded it to 16GB ram and 2TB (2x1TB each) HDDs by replacing its DVD drive for an additional HDD. Its a beast now(bit heavy compared to the today's single PCB sleek MBs).

OP: Better consider Air for your use case(kid may not need a beast to ride on), sleek/compact/price friendly. Once the kid gets full use of it, you can upgrade him with Pro as he needs. BTW, these MBs got reasonable resale value(they are sturdy etc). I have paid for my MB Air (2013 i7(1.7 GHz)/8GB/500 GB Hdd, very good condition) $500 on Craigslist two years back. Very happy so far.

Comparatively Pro has more processor speed, retina display, advanced color gradients, advanced track-pad, advanced battery and advanced graphic card.

PRO comes up only with 4 USB-C flash ports, you need to buy an extension if you want to have regular USB, HDMI, Ethernet and card reader. Air has regular USB and card reader.

Air can't be used to programming

Ee rojullo JVM and most other Programs and Processes are hungry for hardware.

Air lo cheskovachhu, but it'll be a bullock-cart.

Pro lo min Quad-Core and 16 GB compulsory for decent execution speeds.

Macbook Air is just a glorified iPad

Macbook Pro newest model has octa-core CPU and 32 GB DDR3 RAM.
Apple website lo inkaa availability raaledu.

Purpose and necessity is important.
Apple hardware cannot be upgraded anymore, remember this when making a purchase. Previously 8 GB RAM could be upgraded by adding another 4 GB or another 8 GB. Even Processor and HDD or SSD for that matter. Ippudu aa facility lekundaa all components are soldered hard onto the motherboard.

If your son is into Programming, sort of a Whiz Kid, or Heavy PC Gaming, then makes sense, otherwise Chromebook koodaa saripothadi.
