I completely understand. Enterprises will be wary of moving to a still-nascent paradigm (blockchain) when what they currently have just works! EDI is like mail man. It is in the middle, helps you get messages from one to another. Documents from one company are enveloped and sent over with a TO address. Receiver de-envelopes and opens the messages and processes them. EDI formats are standard, X12 format mostly in NA, EDIFACT in Europe and Apac. Based on the transaction type, the formats can be mapped. | ||

Thanks a lot everyone. So EDI is just a set of standards for different systems to talk to each other? If System A needs to send data to System B and if both of them understand a particular EDI standard, you can use that template to send the data? This is interesting. Each industry has a set of standards, like 811 for Telecom, 834(?) For healthcare, etc. Each industry has its own consortium of industry members which defines, maintains, and manages changes to the format of that specification. Just like how software apis are managed. | ||

Annayya EDI ane term is as generic the term car... its global standard terminology... EDI 810, EDI 856 etc ani process wise EDI standards untayi... many ERP systems use EDI to send and receive data from customers/vendors/banks/third party systems.. there are several standard for EDI (some american and european crap )... there are several EDI softwares which convert data from one format to another.. For example in SAP we use EDI to send invoices, asn etc to customers... similarly receiver invoices from vendors etc. how do we do in SAP depends on the architecture of SAP... idocs ane concept untadi and how idocs are translated outside SAP to meet the sender's requirements etc... | ||

EDI is between two parties/organizations who are working on a particular business process together and need to share/exchange data? How does one architect an EDI platform that comprises multiple organizations? Suppose in a supply chain scenario - we have 10 suppliers/vendors/logistics partners etc and they all need to exchange data. How does EDI work in this case?
