Check from 26as available at traces website to account for TDS. If you have form 16 or any tax paid challan from any previous years, you can gain access to traces. If your return matches from 26as, it will be processed quickly with no manual intervention.

Sankara:

You need ITR2 as a non resident.

That's a good tip. Thank you. :-) Will try with ITR2 now. ITR1 has a lot of fields that are not applicable in my case.
This world appearance is a confusion: even as the blueness of the sky is an optical illusion. I think it is better not to let the mind dwell on it, but to ignore it.

No need to show any proofs unless AM (Assessment officer)suspects and raise a query, which is unlikely to happen.

You need ITR2 as a non resident.

Spent zero days in India as a resident last assessment year. However, I do have rental income and dividend income. Together they go beyond the 2.5L cap. So I guess I have to file the returns.

Income from rent - used to pay the housing loan EMI
Income from dividend (Nowhere near the 10L limit though :D)

Thanks everyone.

Upto 10L no tax on dividends..
If your income is more than 2.5L you have to file ITR

Are you an NRI. How many days you lived in India last financial year.

- If your taxable income consisted only of investment income (interest) and/or capital gains income and if tax has been deducted at source from such income, you do not have to file your tax returns.

- If you earned long term capital gains from the sale of equity shares or equity mutual funds, you do not have to pay any tax and therefore you do not have to include that in your tax return

In an FY - if I am not drawing any salary in India but have some dividends earned on the shares I own, do I need to file the returns? Dividends by an Indian company, as far as I know, are exempt from tax as the distribution tax is paid by the company before the dividend is disbursed.

Question is: Do I still need to file an ITR?
