t’s impossible to pick 20 songs from more than 200 soundtracks. This also doesn’t serve as an exhaustive list of Mani Sharma’s best songs. In reality, a lot of the soundtracks these individual songs came from are all good in their entirety. I truly recommend you listen to the full soundtracks of all these songs. And please, celebrate Mani Sharma the musician. Not Mani Sharma the background score composer.

Rama Chilakamma – Choodalani Undi

This soundtrack is full of melodies. But this one’s for the fans, yet the song is still great to listen to. MS uses a lot of plucked/ stringed instruments for this song, and a heavy drum section. Till then, we’d never heard so many stringed instruments in a Telugu song. It was simple things like Indian stringed instruments, and solo violins. Rama Chilakamma took us to a whole new soundscape. This is what made Udit Narayan in Telugu.

Nanda Nandana – Ravoyi Chandamama

This entire soundtrack deserves its own post in all honesty, but I’ll save that for another time. This soundtrack was never appreciated for what it’s worth. Swapnavenuvedo is a good song, but it might’ve over shadowed other songs in the soundtrack.

Nanda Nandana is another one of those songs that shows MS’ range as a composer. Rhythmic bass line, a smattering of synths, flutes, overlaid with an orchestral sound. The second interlude is something you’d never get to hear in a Telugu song.

Hey Penne – Aasai Aasayai (Tamil)

This song is very special. A lovely melody, with expressive singing from Ranjith. And here’s MS using the chipmunk voice before Alvin and the Chipmunks made it popular again. It’s a song tailor made for Ranjith – literally! MS used Ranjith like an instrument and composed this song line by line, specifically for his voice!

Vayyarala Jabilli – Teen Maar

Another feather in MS’ cap. I don’t think a modern composer has tried making a retro song in Telugu! So many acoustic instruments! MS fills a lot of this song with plucks of a variety of stringed instruments in between lines. It’s really fun to listen to! This is probably what Telugu songs of the golden age would’ve sounded like if they had modern recording technology!

Bham Bham Bhole – Indra

Another out of the box song for Chiranjeevi. It’s a beautiful melody, with a heavy beat, and a folk groove that makes up the hook. MS fully uses Hariharan’s improvisation in the first interlude, and this male scat chorus section in the second interlude that you really need a good pair of headphones/ speakers to experience. There’s a lot of happening in the percussion too.

Hut Hut Ja – Balu

It’s hard to believe MS didn’t become the biggest thing to hit Bollywood after this song came out. Kunal Ganjawala just oozes attitude. Look at how MS adds a grand choir, strings, and a violin solo into a song with so much aggression. The bass line really adds some fatness to the song.

Adharaku – Athadu

Self explanatory. The new definition of the hero entrance song. This hasn’t been topped despite the song coming out in 2005. This movie’s sound really took the Telugu music scene to the next level.

Tagilanadi Rabba – Samba

A very classy song with a good groove for NTR. The string runs in this are phenomenal! There’s a synth brass bit in the second interlude, that I’ve never heard in a Telugu song before, or ever again. Very unique arrangements for a “massy” Telugu song

Kokkokomali – Narasimha Naidu

Another raag based song. Only MS can send a raag to the masses, without having it sound like a “classical” song! Check out the bass in the prelude! Can’t get more intricate than that! This is the heart of the song. The arrangements are really good too! MS isn’t kidding when he says there’s sound magic in this song.

Premante – Kushi

This is the best song in the movie, hand produced by MS himself! It might be Devan Ekambaram’s first Telugu song too! Just listen to the variations in the interludes! Female vocal scats, with some bells and a veena, and Indian folk with synths in the second interlude? How does MS get these ideas? It’s also paired with some playful lines by A. M. Ratnam.

Sada Siva – Khaleja/ Mahesh Khaleja

Sorry, I couldn’t find an official link for the full song. But it’s unlikely you haven’t heard the full song many times by now. Huge drums, just the way Lord Shiva would want it. A chorus that gives the song an anthem vibe to it. Unique texture in the lead’s voice. And MS trademarked arrangements.

Oh Cheli – Arjun

This is a breezy melody that’s fantastically produced. I could even go on to say, this may be the best produced Telugu song there ever was. There’s that cat sample, amazing use of synths, and a jazzy sax solo. There’s this competition between the funk guitar, and the strings in the second interlude, that defines the relationship of the leads – always at loggerheads. Can someone like Chitra really sound this playful?

Aata Kavala – Annayya

The item song, reborn. This was the item song that became the definition an item song. It’s a fun song that still sounds very modern to this day with its synths, and driving percussion. Listen to any duet item song that came after this, and you’ll see this is the template for them all.

Dole Dole – Pokiri

The song that brought electronic music closer to the Telugu audience (and Tamil too, I guess). How does someone think of using heavy synths in a song with dhols, guitars, and a violin solo? And that sitar. Sounds like none of these could sound good together when I describe it. But look at what MS does with these instruments!

Adugadugu – Bobby

An unnoticed song from Mahesh Babu’s career, but probably one of his best. This was Ranjith’s first song as a lead singer, with Hariharan joining in too. Great use of guitars, bass, and a beautiful violin solo. Could it be symbolic to use a young singer, and an “old” or mature singer? The Ranjith lines are very melodic, while there’s pain behind Hariharan’s lines. The music video is pretty interesting too.

Chali Gaali Chuddu – Gentleman

Pure jazz is something never heard of in the Telugu music scene before, and here MS is making it look easy. No matter how many new songs of his you enjoy, this is his best song in recent times. – the post 2014 era.

Melliname Melliname – Shajahan (Tamil)

A beautiful melody from MS in Tamil. A very orchestral sounding track, with Indian instruments mixed in. The piano in the second interlude overlaid with a string section feels good to listen to. There’s something soothing about Harish Raghavendra’s voice too.

Cheppamma Chepamma – Murari

This might be Chitra’s best song in Telugu. This song probably wouldn’t be as good without her singing. And you can really see her range as a singer with this song alone – listen to her improvise at the end. When you talk about this song, you’ve got to mention the sampled shenai used for this. It’s a very rich sounding sample, that is still hard to reproduce these days. There’s also a lot of detail with the vocal arrangements in this song – you can hear a chorus of female scats that create a whole new rhythm towards the end of the song. Check out the varying percussion in this song! A combination of electronic drums, 808s, and live drums.

Sahasam – Okkadu

A fitting soundtrack to be MS’ 50th soundtrack! It’s amazing the way the hi – hats, and the oud set the groove of this song, and the melody drives it forward. There’s a lot happening with this song – the Carnatic violin solo, Indian drums, the female Carnatic solo, male Indian folk vocals, an electric guitar, oud rhythm, and a standard drum kit to garnish. You can really see the sheer depth and range of MS as a composer with this pan Indian song. He doesn’t need compose a song in a raag, to use one. He can blend a raag into a song when he wants to.

Yamaha Nagari – Choodalani Undi

Clichéd first choice, but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Everything about this song is amazing. The recording quality, the soundscape, and most importantly, the lyrics! Is it really possible to describe the wonder of Kolkata in Telugu? This song probably brought the guitar to the Telugu masses. How amazing is the first interlude with the guitar solo? And that sax solo in the second interlude? Mani Sharma took the classic, Raghuvamsa Sudha, and made it his own. The original Carnatic song was composed by Patnam Subramanya Iyer, Thyagaraja’s sishya, hence the line “Chiru Thyagaraju, nee kruthinu palikenu mari”

Right from his first movie, MS makes it known he’s the master of all things music.

If you’re like me and grew up in the 90s, you were undeniably raised in the crossfade between Ilayaraja and A. R. Rahman. We might be the most fortunate, with such a diverse musical upbringing. We grooved to the folk beats in Ilayaraja’s music, and were mesmerized by the unique sounds in A. R. Rahman’s music.
Nobody can take away the fact that A. R. Rahman was the disruption to the norm. It was a gamble that changed the game. Telugu music however, was stuck in that monotony for a while. A. R. Rahman’s ascent drove Raj – Koti to score interesting soundtracks like Govinda Govinda, Hello Brother, and M Dharmaraju MA but they didn’t stick.
No one fully took the gamble. No one wanted disrupt the norm. A. R. Rahman himself couldn’t repeat his magic through his Telugu soundtracks like Super Police, and Gang Master. But good things always come those who wait.
We got to experience a much more interesting phenomenon called Mani Sharma. Right from what was supposed to be his first movie, he perfectly blended the nativity Ilayaraja’s music with the unique sounds from A. R. Rahman’s music. He brought voices like Shankar Mahadevan Hariharan, Sujatha Mohan, Udit Narayan, and Sukhwinder Singh among others to Telugu.
Mani Sharma was the disruption. The crossfade we didn’t know we needed. We grew as an audience through his music. We discovered many new musicians in Telugu through him – Shreya Ghoshal, Kunal Ganjawala, Ranjith, and our beloved Thaman, and DSP!
While many are quick to praise Mani Sharma‘s background score, it’s high time to realize his background scores are a mere drop in the Mahati ocean. It’s high time we highlight the magic in Mani Sharma‘s songs, and not just his background scores. Back then, “views” meant nothing. It was all about sales, and here Mani Sharma was making every soundtrack hexa platinum like it was easy! Mani Sharma was never gone, to be back. His prowess was just never noticed.

So, here are what I think are the Top 20 songs that define the uniqueness of Mani Sharma.

A lot of these songs are from mainstream/ commercial movies, but look at the way Mani Sharma still manages to experiment with soundscapes for a “genre” that doesn’t leave much room for change! I think it really takes a good ear to understand, appreciate and love Mani Sharma‘s music.
