it was a topic i read about abit and discussed few times possibly in the db. i dont have the exact resources now. But "Vak" or "Shabd" has alot of importance in vedas. the creation of this universe is with a sound that Brahma makes... believed to be started by "OM". Sound is considered to be part of cosmic energies that can be converted into other forms when used appropriately... (dont want to bring in science here, yet, but think of it that as the equivalence between mass and energy). To be able to make a sound that has real world impact, the entity making the sound should posses the knowledge and enough "power". celestial beings supposedly have unlimited power... brahma, vishnu and siva, durga and so on.. so they are able to grant unlimited number of boons or curses... but when you study rishis/sages, they go through the process strict penance to get this ability, doing enough penance does not automatically translate them to gain the "knowledge", they get the knowledge imaprted to them in the form of boons.. you will always observe that once they gain the boon, their power diminishes. that is if they need another boon, they will have to go through penance again. Similarly, when they have unused spiritual energy, these folks are able to curse, and it diminishes their energy again... vishwamithra comes to mind... after he curses rambha, he had to start over again in his penance. when i say, the curses are active as long as the spirtual power.. i am not talking about the affect of the curse. | ||

Prayer, Penance and Dharma all give a being a certain spiritual power, the more rigorous the acts that add power to being, the more powerful their abilities are to the extent that they can distort reality or create new realities. All beings are capable attaining this power, evidently, and there does not seem to be any difference in the power, whether it is attained by a normal being or some sort of demigod or the supreme godhead. When a being grants and boons or curses or delivers astra's, they are using their spiritual power, and for most beings the spiritual power reserves have bounds. that is a curse delivered or boon given is applicable only till the being's power gets maxed out. but within that boundary, pretty much anyone can curse anyone else, and the receiver will have to be bound to it. | ||
