aadu cheppedi adey... ee roju USDA sticker pedthunnav physical world lo. So you "trust" walmart or amazon that they are delivering the sticker without fail tricking you.

Say if USDA was holding the node and issues 1000 usda barcodes for company A which did organic farming but only produced 100 mangoes. Then bought 900 mangoes from company B at cheaper price and put usda organic barcodes... then it doesnt really matter right? If you used blockchain or existing ERP. End of day consumer will get a forfeited mango which is not organic...

2-3 days ACH settlement cant be compared

ACH and other types of bank transfers are slow not because of technology. There are regulatory issues, competing bank strategies etc. Most importantly banks make money on this floating transaction money. Some countries are implementing faster ACH transfers.

1 sec settlement (what blockchain will be able to do in very near future) vs 2-3 days ACH settlement cant be compared... If banks come up with a stable coin and link to USD.. ACH will be gone..just 1 purpose of blockchain..

Thokkalohdi:

For example the organic mangoes can't become "organic" because someone put a blockchains bar code. You still need USDA to certify the seller. But then source farmer might not be techie enough to do data entry for every mango he produces. So instead of relying on his data entry, he will inevitably transfer that work to a middleman. And we end up in same situation as before. So no benefit of implementing block chain.

I am not sure if you analogy is right. A mango does not become a mango because some middle man said its a mango to begin with. its chemical composition is what makes it a mango.

Now imagine a robotic facility where a particular farmer drives his truch and dumps his produce, the robotic facility is a node in the blockchain that tracks the mangoes, the robotic facility can sort and test the produce, discard suspicioues ones are deliver it to tote, that the farmer can pick up back, but labels the one that pasts its tests. the labeleled "mangoes" then become part of the network.

ofcourse, this is just my vision on how this system would evolve if at all it stays relevant.

Thokkalohdi:

Gist of article: Block chain is supposed to remove the midddleman and regulatory bodies. End of the day you still need them. So you are not really solving any problem and you are implementing a dectralized b.s..

i think this is a misconception with most folks. Blockchain was going to never take out middlemen or regulator bodies, they would always exist if there is need be, but provides an automated way of handling them. that is interaction between the cunsomer and the regulators will happen off-handed without the involvement of a "manual" process of data entry. the regulators will be on of the "node" in the"decentralized network".

The decentralized network is supposed to give a tamper proof system, a network of trusted systems that makes it unmanageable for people who want to tamper a particle of unit of the system.

Current blockchain implementations are computationally heavy, and that is their main disadvantage rather than anything else.

and coming to cryptocurrencies - the current "non-state" or "non-owner" based crytpo-currencies are uses less. anybody who understands currency in a economy is valued will stay the same. there will be some big players in the game, but their vision is long term.

this part was confusing to me, walmart gave up on logistics projects because it was too hard to get the data entry done, how is this resolved by moving to blockchain? someone has to manually enter this data right?

Good read.

So basically cryptos vachinanatha matrana you can't blindly trust the trustless.

Blockchain is not only crappy technology but a bad vision for the future. Its failure to achieve adoption to date is because systems built on trust, norms, and institutions inherently function better than the type of no-need-for-trusted-parties systems blockchain envisions. That’s permanent: no matter how much blockchain improves it is still headed in the wrong direction.

This December I wrote a widely-circulated article on the inapplicability of blockchain to any actual problem. People objected mostly not to the technology argument, but rather hoped that decentralization could produce integrity.

Let’s start with this: Venmo is a free service to transfer dollars, and bitcoin transfers are not free. Yet after I wrote an article last December saying bitcoin had no use, someone responded that Venmo and Paypal are raking in consumers’ money and people should switch to bitcoin.

What a surreal contrast between blockchain’s non-usefulness/non-adoption and the conviction of its believers! It’s so entirely evident that this person didn’t become a bitcoin enthusiast because they were looking for a convenient, free way to transfer money from one person to another and discovered bitcoin. In fact, I would assert that there is no single person in existence who had a problem they wanted to solve, discovered that an available blockchain solution was the best way to solve it, and therefore became a blockchain enthusiast.
