In another banking fraud, Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Thursday registered a case against M/s Totem Infrastructure Limited (Hyderabad), its promoters and directors Tottempudi Salalith, Mrs Tottempudi Kavita for allegedly defrauding Rs 1,395 crores. In a complaint filed by Union Bank of India (UBI), UBI industrial finance branch has said that Totem Infrastructure Limited cheated the banks of Rs 303.84 crore. According to the complaint, a loan was taken from a consortium of eight banks led by the UBI. The total outstanding amount stands Rs 1,394.43 crore. The accounts of Totem Infrastructure Limited became an NPA (Non-performing asset) on June 30, 2012, after loan and interest payments defaulted. Totem Infrastructure was involved in the business related to road projects, waterworks and building construction and it is also a subcontractor for L&T, RITES and IRCON International. According to the investigating agency, it is alleged that the funds were diverted, expenditure was inflated and wages were magnified. UBI in its letter to CBI has also alleged the borrowers and promoters are absconding and their whereabouts are not known to them.
