Who are these Hindus...In KA and parts of TS and MH, the "Hindus" do not have any problem - and even today, in the small towns and villages of KA, Veera Shaivas were always considered different. They do not follow the so called "Hindu" customs and bury their dead. | ||

Tell that to the Lingayats - who do not want to consider themselves as Hindus :-) And also their political leader - Yeddyrappa who was vocal in this demand.(he is doing flip flops on this issue - based on his political affiliation) | ||

The demand has been there for quite some time and thisis was Yedyurapa's demand as well - incidentally he is a "leader" in that community. He has been demanding this for many years - ever since he relinquished the CM. Now the State govt. has conceded the demand - and the ball is in the court of the Central government now. Yedyurappa may or may not gain - depending on the Central government's stand. But for sure - he does not have this emotive issue now. BTW: Nothing wrong in asking for a separate religion and they were a separate sect called VeeraShaivas. They were classified as Hindus after India became Independent. | ||
