Kamboj in his capacity as president of IBJA wrote to RBI governor Raghuram Rajan on July 26, 2014 accusing the UPA government of âdeliberately yielding to the croniesâ by changing the gold policy days before demitting office. A decision was taken on May 21, 2014, five days before the UPA government officially demitted office, which allowed 13 âstar trading houses (STH)â and âpremier trading houses (PTH)â including Choksi-led Gitanjali Gems to import gold and sell about 80 per cent of their total bullion shipment in local markets under the so-called 80:20 scheme. This was tantamount to giving preferential access to these specific traders to profiteer by artificially inflating retail prices.
