that is true.

Paypal filed a patent today on speeding up cryptocurrency payments. i.e, transactions can now happen between seller and buyer "OFF" blockchain network. which kind of breaks the blockchain protocol, but probably introduce a intermediary validation process.

In my view it will not be a replacement of regular currency. currency will always be regulated and backed by a government(even if it meant banks, like good ole days). Bitcoin might end up like gold, which is more like a reserve of value.

It is pretty close. As per Oxford University (took a course on blockchain with them last year):

Annual energy consumption of the Bitcoin network is around 15 Terawatt Hours – with mining costs of more than 747 Million US dollars. This energy can power 1.3 million US households.
