Gujral was being toasted as the incumbent prime minister, there was a quiet celebration at Andhra Bha-van. Naidu was complimented not only for resolving the crisis, but also for playing a neutral role. He refrained from throwing his own hat in the ring and, according to those who watched him at work in the last few weeks, did not allow any of his biases to cloud his decisions. "Naidu was like a perfect umpire. He was totally neutral," said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi. Added Industries Minister Murasoli Maran: "Throughout the entire crisis, the one man I admired was Chandrababu Naidu. He worked from morning till late into the night for days on end. It was a very tough task before him. But he did it with great credit." Naidu's trump card was his patience. According to an aide, he is a very good listener and heard out every leader. But he also had at his fingertips projections of the outcome of elections in every state. This data he would share with the representatives of the various constituents who came to see him. He took copious notes on the choice of leader of each constituent. And finally, when a consensus seemed impossible, he put forward the candidate his analysis showed would be least objected to—I.K.
