Frankly speaking, the Uttarayanam is different from both Lunar and Solar or Lunisolar calendars. It is a different concept. It is the earth's declination. The earth makes an angle about the equator and it varies from 23.45 degrees north to 23.45 degrees south during its rotation. Hence for an observer on the earth, the sun seems to swing to north starting from supposedly from winter solstice and toward the south from the summer solstice. I agree with you. Makara Sankranti is the only transition of Sun into Capricorn (for an observer on the earth) but not the Beginning of Uttarayana. I guess the reason we initiate Uttarayana on this day could be that this also marks the new Solar month.
