Teluguswift:

Glad to see Telugu books on the list. I haven't learn Telugu, and can't write Telugu. But i can read it, albeit a bit slowly. I do want to pick up my Telugu reading - have read a few in the past by Yaddanapoodi and Vasireddy Sitha Devi. Less than 5 i think. Whenever i go to Hyd, i pick up a few books at Visalandhra, someday will have to get around to reading them. All the books you mentioned are classics that i have to read someday.

Mikkymouse:

Ammayilaki ayithe romance books kooda add cheyyandi,

Idhi naaku out of syllabus question.

500 pg book for me too takes minimum 3 weeks with the current level of distractions. 2 days ante, breakneck speed, i used to do that 2 decades back when i finished LOTR over a long weekend.

24 is a good number. In fact travel is the best time to read, I used to average around 20-25 earlier, but a recent change in jobs a couple of years back gives me a lot more time largely due to daily commute. I travel around 1.5 hours each day in public transport. On an average i can read around 20-25 pages in that time as i too am a slow reader. So every 10 days i can easily finish a book as i have some regular travel every week or two to another city like Mumbai/ Bangalore or Chennai. So doing 40 books is not difficult even without a lot of reading at home due to my young ones.

nice!

targeting 30 this year - hope to do at least 35...that means 3 books a month..

When Bill Gates says he reads a book every week at his level of social and public life, i feel that we should be able to achieve that with some discipline.

Great! I've added some of the books in this thread to my reading list. 45 books is awesome!

I am a very slow reader so my reading challenge for 2017 was 22 books - I've managed to read 24 books. With a career change, 2 little kids and lots of travel - the only time I really had was after the kids went to bed and over pockets of time over the weekends when they were asleep. Anyway the love of books made me plan around their schedules and somehow scrape through.

This year I am targeting 30 books. Let's see.

All of my books are nonfiction and some are extremely dense reads. I'll include the list sometime today.

Read just 16 books last year (Technical books consider cheyyaledhu)

I think Netflix and CCDB are the prime culprits. :-(

11 English and 6 Telugu

English:

Fire and Fury Michael Wolff (Still reading)
Origin Dan Brown
After On - A Novel of Silicon Valley Rob Reid
Camino Island John Grisham
Sita - Warrior of Mithila Amish Tripathi
Change Agent Daniel Suarez
Mr. Penumbra's 24 Hour Book Store Robin Sloan
Bombay Fever Sidin Vadukut

The Bible According to Mark Twain - Mark Twain (3rd time)

My picks are The Bible, Change Agent and Bombay Fever

Gona Ganna Reddy Adivi Bapiraju (Still reading)
Pakudu Rallu Ravuri Bharadwaja

Start off with crime/ thriller books - they are an easy way to get back into the reading habit - these can range from Agatha Christie, Iain Rainkin, Patricia Highsmith, Patrcia Cornwell, Higashino, Harlan Coben, Henning Mankell, Stephen King (his books are too long though), James Ellroy (not for everyone).

If comedy is to your liking one can't go wrong with PG Wodehouse, though he might not be everyone's cup of tea.

Non-fiction lo Bill Bryson, Jared Diamond, Richard Dawkins, Atul Gawande, Noah Harari are all good.

Thanks annai:-)..will start with non fiction.

Filmbuff:

I read Devotion by Suspect X last year and agree with you.Climax is something which we do not predict.I liked the way author unfolded the story and protagonist characterization.

Ghachar Ghochar is translated with the same name in November chatura and I liked it.
Nadamantrapu siri vaste people behavior ela change avutundo undercurrent ga baga cheppadu .Climax was left to readers imagination .I also liked Zugari Cross again a kannada book translated to telugu and available in kinige.Although translation is not smooth i recommend this.

Last year I read Girl with Dragon tattoo and I liked Devotion by Suspect X over this even though the former is also a good read.

Read 45 books in total, my highest ever, whatsapp detox helping. A few recommendations:

Best Crime Book - Devotion of Suspect X by Keigo Higashino - even by the deviously complex Higashino standards, this was non-pareil, but what makes this a winner is the deeply troubling love story underpinning the criminal act.

Best Historical Fiction - Lustrum by Robert Harris - this is how history should be written or taught, drama/ politics in Rome involving Cicero/ Ceasar/ Pompeii, foreshadowing the fall of rome and the move from a republic to kingdom - reads like a thriller.

Best non-fiction - Being Mortal by Atul Gawande - provides fresh insights backed by strong research and anecdotes about how we approach terminal illness and old age and what needs to change from the current practice of treating them as patients and handling them as individuals still wanting independence. Lots of nice philosophical thoughts scattered throughout. Close second - Homo Dues by Yual Noah Harari.

Best non-crime fiction - Ghachar Ghochar - packs an outstanding punch in a slim 120 pages book. Flat out masterpiece, translation of a Kannada book by Vivek Shanbhag. Excellent translation by Srinath Perur. Minimalist but layered and troubling depiction of the family politics, middle class moralities or lack of them and the descent into madness. Must read, again and again.
