I'm not talking about distributions, am talking about contributions. Here is what I have heard from tax guy: 1. 529 contributions are not exempted from Fed Tax (meaning we are paying with after tax money). Some states (ex: CA) do provide tax exemption. So in CA case, we save 9 dollars for every 100 spent on 529. This calc is based on 9% state income tax. 2. If we withdraw the distributions for non-edu purposes, then I'm not sure what happens. 3. We can use the money for education of anyone that is related. You, spouse, kids, grandkids etc.., What I don't know is whether it can be used for friends/their kids education. 4. Major downside for me is, this money cannot be used to fund education in foreign countries. Say you send your kid to India, then you will not be able to use the funds. | ||

529 is good. But not just 529, enroll in other plans also for the kid in case kid becomes a college or high school dropout. Such as Roth etc. 529 tho advantage is the funds get passed on to the siblings. | ||

The competition is so much in ATL , i think in 6 to 7 years it would really tough to get into instate. we have only 2 good colleges ..GA tech and state of GA , athens.. GA tech is already tough ... yes, based on high school grades and SAT/ACT scores etc In Indiana, for example Indiana Univ and PURDUE in-state fee is about 12K per year half of the desi kids in my school district get some tuition waiver , 50% waiter, 75% waiver etc boarding costs around 12-15K per year private colleges, fee itself 50K+ untadhi.
