Here is one data point: Under the previous Congress-led government, under the Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana (RGGVY, a rural electrification scheme), had connected 108,280 villages to the grid between 2005-06 and 2013-14. From 2014 to 2017, under the BJP’s rural electrification drive, 14,528 villages have been electrified. On average, the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government electrified 12,030 villages per year, while the BJP government has electrified 4,842–less than half the UPA’s average. Out of the total approx 6 lakhs villages, nearly 90-95% were already covered during the previous decades. Most of the south states are already 100% covered. i) To provide electrification to all villages ii) Feeder separation to ensure sufficient power to farmers and regular supply to other consumers iii) Improvement of Sub-transmission and distribution network to improve the quality and reliability of the supply iv) Metering to reduce the losses These are the major objectives of the first scheme to make electricity reach all villages a village can be considered as electrified when it reaches certain threshold households Now this is to make it reach the last mile either by giving free power connection or at discounted rates and also please do not confuse with free power, this is only free power connection | ||

DeenDayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY) Keeping in view the above problems, Ministry of Power, Government of India has launched Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana for rural areas having following objectives: i) To provide electrification to all villages ii) Feeder separation to ensure sufficient power to farmers and regular supply to other consumers iii) Improvement of Sub-transmission and distribution network to improve the quality and reliability of the supply iv) Metering to reduce the losses 3. Financial provisions: · Scheme has an outlay of Rs 76000 Cr for implementation of the projects under which Government of India shall provide Grant of Rs 63000 Cr · A total of Rs 14680 Cr worth projects have already been approved out of which projects amounting to Rs 5827 Crs have been approved for Bihar state. 4. At the launch, PM Modi said that India is moving from 'Bijli Sankat' (lack of electricity) to 'Bijli Surplus' (surplus electricity). "From 'Bijli Sankat,' we are moving to 'Bijli Surplus'," he said. Speaking at the event, PM Modi said his government is "dedicated to 'garib kalyan'," and that this is evident in its working. "We care about the four crore families who still do not have access to electricity," the PM said. "Under Saubhagya, the government will provide door-to-door power connections." The Modi government had in 2015 announced a 1,000-day target to electrify over 18,000 villages that did not have access to electricity "We had promised to bring electricity to 18,000 villages, and now we have to electrify only 3,000 villages," said PM Modi.
