Brahmotsavam - Reimagined Prologue: A young Satyaraj - wandering aimlessly in life - not sure of what to do. Lost his parents in his childhood. All that he has are three pictures of his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather. He has some extended family members in the village who do not entertain him. At this point, Satyaraj takes a vow that he should get back the support of relatives - If not his own, at least from marriage. He ends up falling in love with Revathi who is the stepchild of Rohini Hattangadi who has her own four sons. Rohini Hattangadi immediately says YES as she doesn't want to spend a fortune on the wedding of her stepchild. "Good riddance" she thinks and sends away her step daughter with Satyaraj. However, Revathi is respected by all the four sons of Rohini Hattangadi. The eldest of the batch, Rao Ramesh helps Satyaraj start a new venture - by secretly giving Satyaraj 400 rupees funded by his father (Rohini's husband - Revathi's father too). Then he stands by Satyaraj in times of happiness and peril. Together, they flourish. The business takes off. Satyaraj, who longs for a big family, asks all the four brothers to come with him and help him in the business. They all agree. Rohini, though happy that her sons are getting settled in a good place, is not very comfortable talking to Satyaraj as she is secretly ashamed of her original thinking (Of getting Revathi married off to a nobody) Chapter 1 Fast forward 20 odd years to the present day. Thanks to Satyaraj's leadership, they are a well respected business family today and are very rich both in terms of net worth as well as family values. They have managed to stay a closely knit family with all the four brothers and their families staying with Satyaraj and Revati's family in a sprawling mansion. Rao Ramesh is not particularly excited by this whole situation. He wants freedom to do whatever he wants. He has stood by Satyaraj's side all these years but is now losing respect on the street as he is getting marginalized in the paradigm of "Satyaraj and Others", The others ignore his position and are happy to be a part of Satyaraj's beautiful extended family. Satyaraj has two kids. The girl is married off to a well settled businessman in London. The boy, Mahesh, is studying MBA in London School of Economics. He meets his sister's friend Samantha in London and sparks fly. It is at this juncture that Rao Ramesh decides to call it a day and move out of Satyaraj's shadow. He has his reasons. He doesn't want to offend Satyaraj. So he cooks up a story of having a better opportunity in a new city and moves out with his family. Everyone's stunned and Satyaraj is really sad to see his trusted friend leave. "Our strength lies in our unity. Divided we fall, united we rule" he says dejectedly. Rao Ramesh doesn't listen. Mahesh, learns all this from Revathi. He decides to travel to India and instead of going to Satyaraj's place, he directly goes to Rao Ramesh' house, who is packing all his stuff to move out to Chennai. Chapter 2 Mahesh tries to convince Rao Ramesh to stay back. Rao Ramesh doesn't put up a big fight and says he would come back to Satyaraj's house. Elated, Mahesh drives Rao Ramesh and Jayasudha to his father's mansion. There, Satyaraj waits on the front porch for their arrival. When Rao Ramesh comes into the house, Satyaraj puts his hands on him and says "We should always remain together". When Rao Ramesh tries to explain the reason behind his action, Satyaraj cuts him off saying he doesn't want to listen to that now. He just wants to put it all behind them. Rao Ramesh pleads with him to at least listen to what he wants to say. It falls on deaf ears. At this point Rao Ramesh cracks up and states that he wanted everyone in the family to listen to what he has to say including Mahesh. He explains how offensive it is to be just a part of "Satyaraj and Others" and not have any individual identity or respect in the society. He says Satyaraj's intention might be good but it is not working for him. He accuses Satyaraj as being a dictator suppressing all other voices. And then, he states that he doesn't have any job at hand, no opportunity in sight - but still he wants to leave immediately and would rather beg for food than be in this house. Mahesh stops him at the doorstep and repeats his father's message. "We should always be with our relatives" At this point Rao Ramesh laughs and says. "What relatives? Your father doesn't have any own relatives. All relatives he has today are from marriage. He doesn't even know who his paternal or maternal family members are. Look it is easy to say - Relations are great. It is incredibly difficult to maintain them." He leaves the house with his family leaving everyone shattered. Mahesh tries to console his father. But Satyaraj keeps repeating. "He is right. I don't have anyone. All these - I thought were my own - but they are all Rao Ramesh and Rohini Hattangadi's relatives. I have no idea who my folks are." Then he shows Mahesh those three photographs hanging on the wall and tells Mahesh to go find Satyaraj's relatives immediately and get back Rao ramesh' trust. As he says those words, he realizes that his days on the planet have come to an end. Satyaraj passes away. Mahesh comes down to tell everyone but is stunned to see an empty house save for his mother. Everyone's gone. He realizes how alone his family is. He knows what he needs to do - Fulfill his father's last wish. (Interval - To be continued) Chapter 3 | ||
