true . considering the life and death as bits, its a genericl problem if you have 2 rats, in 1 go you can identify upto 4 chems if you have 3 rats, in 1 go you can identify upto 8 chems if you have 4 rts, in 1 go you can identify upto 16 chems | ||

Principle of elimination use cheyyalanukunta... Common chemicals in two groups R1+R2 - 1 R1+R3 - 2 R2+R3 -3 Chemical that is unique to one group R1 - 4 R2 - 5 R3 - 6 Chemical that is present in all the groups: R1+R2+R3 - 7 Chemical that is absent in all the groups: 8 So finally R1 - 1,2,4,7 R2 - 1,3,5,7 R3 - 2,3,6,7 We can assign chemicals as we wish, but the principle is the same. I think this is binary (bits) problem. One can find out in ten minutes. Numbers - bits 0 - 0 0 0 1 -. 0 0 1 2 -. 0 1 0 3 - 0 1 1 4 -. 1 0 0 5 -. 1 0 1 6 -. 1 1 0 7 - 1 1 1 There are 3 colums one for each rat. So no.5 chemical is served for rat 1 and rat 3. No.6 chemical is served for rat 1 and rat 2. ... In this case, at the end of ten minutes if rat 1 and rat 3 does together, chemical 5 is the culprit. If no. 7 is poison, then all 3 rats die. ( You can call no.0 as poison 1 and no.7 as poison 8). I | ||

good one. it can be done in 1 go, as 2 power 3 is 8 (2 being life or death for the rat). that is rats and its possibilites of life and death can be arranged in 8 unique ways. there are four possibilities in 1 go 0 rats dying 1 rat dying 2 rats dying 3 rats dying divide the chemicals in this order For the case 0 where no rat dies - keep aside one chemical out lets say 1 For the case 1 rat dying each rat gets one unique chemical (example (2,3,4)) For the case 3 - give all the rats the same poison (example 5) For the case 2 - divide the remaining chemicals(that is 3) in to groups of three with two of the same chemicals(6,6,7)(7,8,8) 2567 3568 4578 | ||

divide 8 into 2 sets of 4.. I will first set 4 chemicals on first rat.. it is alive after 10 mins then i will move on the other set and divide that into 2 sets of 2 each and repeat the same. There are 8 non-reactive chemicals out of which one is poisonous. You have three lab rats to test them on. The poison takes 10 mins to work. How will you find out which is the poisonous chemical in the least possible time? |
