Why should I hide? I am the survivor, not the accused, says Varnika Kundu Varnika Kundu wants to tell her story. She doesn't want to hide her identity, unlike so many survivors of sexual harassment and stalking cases. She would rather set an example for other survivors by publicly facing up to the challenge+ . The message to her stalkers is that she is not afraid. "Why should I hide my identity when I am the survivor and not the accused?" she asked while talking to TOI on Monday, two days after living through a nightmare on the streets of Chandigarh. Varnika, whose father Varinder Singh Kundu+ is the additional chief secretary of Haryana Tourism, was stalked right in the heart of the city on Friday night by Vikas Barala, son of Haryana BJP chief Subhash Barala, and his friend. "After stalking me for more than 25 minutes, the two boys said sorry to me in front of the police and tried to convince me not to register a case," the braveheart said, adding, "But I decided go ahead and file a complaint about the episode which left me frightened." Despite Vikas belonging to an influential family of the region, Varnika is not concerned that her stalkers got bail. "I am not looking for justice only for myself. I have stood up for all girls. From now on, boys should think twice before behaving like this," she said. Varnika, who is one of the few woman DJs in Chandigarh, is upset over a BJP official questioning her lifestyle. "Why ask me about what I was doing out late at night? The two stalkers should be asked what they were up to," she said defiantly while responding to Chandigarh BJP vice-president Ramveer Bhatti, who had said that while his party supported her, she should not have been out at night. Bhatti retracted his statement later in the evening. Some men tried to embarrass Varnika on social media by posting pictures of her with old friends from her Facebook account. They claimed that Varnika had known Vikas earlier because one of the friends looked like him. However, the pictures were of a totally different individual who is a musician from a southern state. "I do not want to comment on the pictures but they were picked up to taint my image and nothing else," she said. Besides being a DJ, Varnika holds a black belt in the martial art of Choi Kwang-Do and believes that it was her training that helped her remain calm in the face of adversity. On Raksha Bandhan day, she said, "Instead of just tying rakhis to their brothers, girls should learn martial arts so that they can handle such situations." She adds that she won't be happy till the guilty are punished. |

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/chandigarh/cops-get- footage-of-duo-chasing-varnika-kundu/articleshow/59964193.cm s CHANDIGARH: After initially claiming that they found little evidence from CCTV footage, Chandigarh DSP Satish Kumar told TOI late on Monday evening that the police have unearthed some evidence of the SUV with the two men chasing Varnika Kundu's car+ on five CCTV cameras. He, however, refused to give further details. The Chandigarh cops were facing a flak for allegedly diluting the charges in the stalking case as they did not add IPC Sections for kidnapping in the FIR. Why should I hide? I am the survivor, not the accused, says Chandigarh braveheart Varnika Sources in the police department said footage of CCTV cameras installed at five locations in Sector 26 were procured. Cars of both the accused and the complainant were visible, but at a distance. A senior official told TOI that the cops were trying to gather footage of cameras installed at private properties on the route specified by the woman for conclusive evidence. UT SSP Eish Singhal said footage would be technically analysed by experts. Refusing to divulge further details, the SSP also did not give any specific number of cameras installed on the route and how many of them were functional. On the route of the incident, UT police's three CCTVs were installed at Sector 2726 light point, Transport light point and Housing Board light point. Each junction has four cameras, but reportedly half of them don't work. The woman had taken the internal road of Sectors 7 and 26, of which no CCTV footage is available. Now, police will rely on cameras installed by shopkeepers and residents. |
