I did sold a lot/site and home in India in 2016 and got some money back and parked some money in bank deposits in India. 1. tax implications - No matter whether you keep the sale proceeds in India or get them to US, you have to declare that in your tax returns. There is a captial gains tax applicable for the net proceeds. If you purchases a property in India lets say in 2005 for Rs.10,00,000. Now it is Rs.50,00,000. You sold it for Rs,50,00,000. You pay tax in India on Rs.40,00,000. Lets say you paid tax of Rs.6,00,000. then your net proceeds are Rs.34,00,000. In US you have to pay tax on Rs.34,00,000 converted into US$. However, you can add any registration fee, upgrade costs etc to your purchase cost and deduct them from your sale proceeds. You need to show your NRI/NRO accounts in FBAR also in case your sale proceeds parked there are more than US $10,000 at any point of time in the prior tax year. | ||
