They claim those checks aren't being done and that enlistees are being trapped in basic training for months, unable to deploy or advance in their military careers. At the same time, a hold has been placed on U.S. citizenship applications submitted by these recruits, causing some to lose their legal status to remain in this country. More than 10,000 soldiers - many from India, China, and South Korea - have been recruited through the program since it was launched in 2009. Last September, Acting Undersecretary of Defense Peter Levine issued a memo that directed that no one in the program could receive any kind of security clearance during their first tour of duty. |
