Yes, ot,speech n aba therapists do yearly evaluation. After OT eval this year, mine went from 2 sessions a week to 1 session since he was within +/-4month level compared to typical kids. So looks like these evals are good enough. Malla India vellinappudu we will get an eval done with kalyan chakravarthy. he might suggest different supplements based on his current development. next challenge is schooling next yr. |

Anthamidhya: @ms/ishan - maaku india diagnosis with prior pediatrician observation tho, maa pediatrician prescribed therapies which insurance accepted. Is there any value in getting re-evaluated with child psychologist or behav pediatrician here ?
Ideally I would do yearly evaluation to track the progress and discuss our concerns. The actual pediatricians and neuro-developmental peds are pretty useless for treatment suggestions, but psychologists can be handy. If your kid is in ABA therapy, the therapists do periodic evaluation and parent meetings. Don't text and drive ! |

Nookraju: trying for EIP from county, let me call them again today what they say and also trying for appointment with behavioral peds..my kid is less than 2, speech delay.
As M_S said, ask them if they will accept a child psychologist's or speech language pathologist (SLP) evaluation...though they are not MDs, they are very quick to give appointments. Don't text and drive ! |

Nookraju:behavioral peds evaluation ki 6 to 8 months wait time undi trying for EIP from county, let me call them again today what they say and also trying for appointment with behavioral peds..my kid is less than 2, speech delay.
Behavioral Pediatrician's are very rare breed ... in a city like there are handful of them, and yes the wait times are horrendous, especially when they say we need to start acting as early as possible. Just for getting a diagnosis, i know some folks have gone through children psychologists, who are qualified to make an assessment for autism. considerably cheaper and less wait times. Not sure, how effective a switch to a behavioral pediatrician at a later point would be though. |

Ishan:But, autism is such a broad syndrome that only a subset of autistic kids have such leaky guts. My son for example only had a reflux issue when he was young, but now can digest pretty much everything with no Gut issues (touch wood). Any of these interventions should be taken on case by case basis, slowly and carefully. I usually pursue only those treatments which are scientifically proven at least once.
Agree. My son never had any food or gut related issues. but found these studies interesting. I was surprised by the progress of Milan(the kid in the blog) once the treatment started.
Nookraju:ee roju ma county ki call chesthe first evaluation is done by Behavioral pediatric than we will help for speech therapy etc annaru what is the logic behind it..can you provide some info on this pls
called who in the county? Which state are you in? Each state has its own autism related programs. Example : Georgia's Babies Cant wait, Alabama's Early Intervention system and so on. Your Pediatrician will be able to give the details for your state, or you could google. This early intervention program does not require a Behavioral Pediatrician, or psychologyst diagnosis. they do their own analysis and check for clarification. This is not a medical diagnosis. Once qualified the child will be eligible for at home services are services through the school system. Kids under 3 yrs of age, will qualify for at home services, and above 3 qualify for school system services. Alternatively you could also get medical diagnosis done through behavioral pediatrician, once you get this diagnosis, you could get private speech, OT and ABA therapies - and most insurances now cover a good portion of Speech and OT. If your Insurance Provider's state, mandates ABA to be covered , then ABA would also be covered through insurance. I am getting burnt for ABA Anyway - if the kid is below 3 yrs, I would suggest private therapies, with doctor's diagnosis. Having personal experience in two states (although not the best of states for Autism related services), and hearing from few others who were from other states, the non-school system services are not adequate enough.(purely my personal experience). But, after 3, if the kid qualifies for school system services, opt for it. For many kids, this has been of significant help, in addition to the private therapies. |

Mental_sachinodu:what is your take on the research that see Autism as an affect of gut bacteria
The association between gut and autism is well known, but the exact relationship is poorly understood at this point. The best theory is that autism in general is an immunological disorder, and gut being one of the most important defense organs of our body, is also whacked because of immune disease. Gut acts like border security force, and when its impaired (leaky gut), many things infiltrate the body causing all kinds of problems. All these therapies which aim at gut (including the 'worm' therapy) restore the balance to an extent and improve the symptoms. But, autism is such a broad syndrome that only a subset of autistic kids have such leaky guts. My son for example only had a reflux issue when he was young, but now can digest pretty much everything with no Gut issues (touch wood). Any of these interventions should be taken on case by case basis, slowly and carefully. I usually pursue only those treatments which are scientifically proven at least once. Don't text and drive ! |

Suramin and zoloft are not related. Zoloft is an antidepressent. Suramin has been around for a long time for the treatment of some african sickness fever caused by some parasites...there has been a recent study about the effectiveness of suramin for autism. The sample size is very small (5 in each group) but all the five kids showed improvement, of course with side effects. Here is the actual study. http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/acn3.424/full BTW,has anyone tried super-nu-thera? Don't text and drive ! |

Anthamidhya:Another friend of mine told that he saw big difference in speech once he started biomed, stuff I mentioned related to vitamins, minerals n supplements. Give it a shot. but that needs to be used for 6-8 months before seeing good results. It took us solid 9 months before we saw an iota of difference.
thank you. I will focus on this from now on. Fish oil and other supplements. How did you decide what supplements to give in what doosages. Our developmental pediatrician is useless. |

Urumi:hayya, he couldn't tolerate any of the supplements between ages 2 n 3.
sorry to hear that. was this due to gut issues ? will let you know if I come across someone with similar issues which might be of more help. around 18 months, my kid had 2 days of vomitings and diarrahea and that is when he started to regress when we look back. so can totally understand losing out one full year due to gut issues. regular infections vasthunte, it's possible due to tonsils. friends elder kid (neuro-typical kid) ki regular infections vasthunte, they removed tonsils around 3yrs and he was fine after that. |

@all -OM said shirodhara massages helped his kid. has anyone tried that ? if not, can you enquire in your circles if anyone has tried that and the results for the same. I'm doing the same in my circle. Will update here. I would like more data points to decide if I need to take the kid to India to get this done. This will impact schooling of my elder one, so wanna take this step if there is more evidence that it will be helpful. |

Is this after pediatrician visit ? Did the pedi do a check up ? 22 months antunnaru. Ask for early 2yr check up or paid check-up and consult immediately. Take the mchat for autism test and figure out where the kid stands. It's mentally very very tough to go through the process but you gotta do it. All best and hope results turn out positive for your kid. |

Anthamidhya:
Ayurveda is my first choice for any chronic condition like knee pain, stomach, liver and other problems. Since autism is genetic/DNA related I am suggesting to try other safe methods to kickstart the curing process along with ayurveda or whichever method you feel comfortable. chakra healing has very good potential to cure any disease because it is much more powerful. you can start by making your kid listen to this music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvmAYt9KtAM |

If you rule out vision problems, try this one. Use a torch light in a dark room and keep moving it from one wall to another. Slowly kid will be interested in the light and will try to follow the light. This will hopefully help with eye contact. We did this for our kiddo. As with anything we don't know which helped him but his eye contact has improved drastically, i.e ~50% of typical kids. |

Ishan:OMG - all desis?
Yes, all desis. Wife says she see mostly desis and tellals here. not much sinese or koreans. Either they do something differently or don't open up as much or the incidence rate is low. But I have read that in general autism incidence is much higher in scientific/tech community. It's one of the reasons that gives the core techies the concentration powers needed to work on single problem for longer times. Good to know that your kids expressive skills are increasing. How old is yours ? @jalsa - sorry andi, this is not in nj. |

Ishan:Just came here to say that you are doing a great work here by educating people. . Repetition is important but it needs to be contextual, other wise it will be mechanical. I strongly believe that training autistic kids must be multi-dimensional and must include gross motor skills, fine motor skills, cognition, physiological, social, familial, academic, recreational and of course brute force training (repetition).
Yes, as the kid learns a few things with repetition you need to move to advanced stuff. It's like any other learning. Rote repition helped mine in the beginning when he had no words. that helped him build vocabulary of 50 words which he could say and then we moved to actual usage of the same. Now he catches any new word within first/second hearing. We try to do the incorporate as much mixed learning as possible. Hoping that this will be his year to take off. |

For optimal and faster results, all these need to be incorporated in the daily routine. Subconsciously we do include them, but some times we forget some aspects and focus too much on only few.
Excellently put! Everything has to be contextual. I ask my kid if she's hungry (when it's almost feeding time). She'll say yes. We feed her and I ask her again if she's hungry. She'll again say yes. So we started telling her after she completes her lunch to say no. Whenever we say "hungry" she has associated it in her memory that she has to say yes. we are trying to teach her context based answers. |

Emc2:exactly doc ide recommend chesadu for now. sending him to day care and spend more time with him instead of giving him for gadgets
i would suggest to share the challenges with the day care teacher, if they luck out may be the teacher will help him. I have seen a few amazing teachers who make a lot of difference with these kids. In general these kids, who are not similar to the other kids in the class, slowly drift off and play their own games alone, which will not benefit him. they need to be engaged. Looks like he likes physical play when it comes to peers(his brother), if he has such a company it will help him draw into other activities, but if he does not have that company, he will need help from the teacher. again, each kid will be different. parents are the best judges. |

vunkl - although i agree that there are some cases of over analysis and anxiety - its rarely case where parents get a burden of their hands. if you know any parents, its emotionally, physically and financially draining.
Emc2:
From what I am reading, this kid has some traits, but not something to worry about, he will outgrow any delay in his development unless his parents are seeing any regression of skills. his growth curve might be different than most kids, and may need some help in social setting. exposure with other kids and helping with maintaining focus when on verbal conversation would be key. |

Andhravodu:I think it's a case of over anxiety from patents side. Kids ni mature adults laga expect cheste how yaa ** No, we don't expect our kids to be like adults. We expect them to be similar to other kids in achieving their development milestones within +/- 6months to 1 yr range. *** There are genuine autistic cases, ** Thanks for atleast giving this concession *** but manorirty vatilo, parents just simply want to get a burden from their hands. ** So the best way for that is to label their kid autistic and get therapies done. Therapies ante edho cinema ki pampatam tho confuse ayyaru emo. One parent has to drive the kid back and forth every day to the center, spend 90$ per session while trying to take care of other kids activities. This sounds like a nice to way to reduce burden *** US Doctors go by rule book as they are scarex of malpractice suits
** Doctors here have no clue on how to advise the parents on next steps after labeling a kid autistic. Parents are left in the dark. Everything I learnt was from googling, talking to other parents around the world ( very few people come out openly to discuss due to the stigma attached), and psychiarists in India. Doctors here are against diet changes as well but we see clear difference. US lost 50 yrs of research time on autism due to Leo Kanners misdiagnosis. We have been doing something the last 5-10 yrs. If there is one thing that I learnt from my kid being autistic is that each person has different strengths and weakness, we cannot expect everyone to be good at everything that we are good at. all of us are different and most of all one shouldn't JUDGE anyone quickly. with that said, you get my benefit of doubt for not having enough exposure to the world of ASD. |

I think it's a case of over anxiety from patents side. Kids ni mature adults laga expect cheste how yaa There are genuine autistic cases, but manorirty vatilo, parents just simply want to get a burden from tjeir hands. US Doctors go by rule book as they are scarex of malpractice suits |

Emc2:
There will be lot of chicken and egg issues. i.e since he cannot talk, he is pushing you towards there. he won't talk if he doesn't add on to his vocabulary. we stop talking to him because it's frustrating to keep asking and see no response, overtime we reduce stimulating him with words even without realizing and just get used to his pulling/pushing. therapies will help with how to overcome these. I don't if you came across one of my previous post about what all we did when we found our little one was autistic. Repeating it here, hoping it helps your friend or others in similar situation "We found out about it when he was around 2 yrs old. This is what we did and hope this helps other parents with similar kids. 1. Vision, hearing tests in US to rule out any internal issues. 2. Complete blood tests for food allergies and heavy metal poisoning in India. Luckily none of the tests had issues. But we still decided to go ahead with GFCF diet. 3. Got sleep ECG & MRI done. One of the initial tests showed absence seizures which show up as kid staring into distance. But another test didn't replicate the issue. 4. Some of the above tests were done under the guidance of Dr.Kalyan Chakravarthy, a child psychiatrist in Hyderabad. He did a UK based autism score and said that he was in decent autism spectrum and suggested GFCF diet, massages and techniques on how to deal with him. 5. Since then we did massages for 6 months every day at home, speech and OT therapy in USA. At home, we got rid off all the puzzles and other stuff he was obsessed with and started teaching him from posters of birds, fruits, vehicles (stuff from India bazaars). We put all our time on him, especially my wife. She pretty much sat with him either reading a book, showing him how to play with a toy or teaching him colors etc. Initially it took 100 attempts to teach a word.We broke it down to basic words that he would encounter daily such as hi, bye, amma, nanna, dog, bird etc. Once he got a hang of the word, we showed him dog outside so that he could make a connection to the same. We didn't hesitate to tell our friend circle the problem he had. This helped us ask others to help us in interacting with him. We requested everyone to give him a hi-five to kick start hi social interactions. 6. In US, we also got a tongue tie surgery done. Someone in India told us that his tongue was stuck to the bottom of the mouth and has restricted movement. 7. After 6 months of intensive work, some vitamin supplements(calcium, magnesium, zinc and another tonic for memory, omega 3 ) he started showing progress. The first time he jumped with both his legs in air, we were so thrilled. He did that after we did that few 1000 times. Repetition was the key. 8. Our strategy was to focus on 2-3 items a month and get that to work for him. We took him to parks daily to get his muscles worked out. Olive oil with epsom salt massages at night to calm him down. My wife started baking Gluten Free Cakes for him at home for every bday party we attended since he was being left out from the fun. GFCF diet means, no milk. So we substituted that with Raagi jaava mixed with powdered nuts. 9.Over the summer, my elder son being at home coupled with MIL from India being here helped him a lot. He improved by leaps and bounds by end of summer. Now he has lot of words, can communicate basic needs if he wants to. One of the issue with autistic kids is their lack of eye contact. But after one year of all the above, his eye contact has improved the most. He can find stuff from nook and corner of the house, better than any of us. He also throws a konte look/smile and teases us while being mischievous. 10. He still has issues with being scripted in his words, repeating something from before, tantrums etc. Still a long way to go. End of the week, my wife will be exhausted dealing with him. Some days it feels very depressing but whenever he learns something new it feels soooo gooood and keeps us going. 11. Don't lose hope - easier said than done - but what other options have we got other than to fight. Please PM me if you want to discuss more and am more than happy to share more details in person. " |

+1 to anthamidya bhayya's post Few more to add..humming is not a good sign.. anxiety control chesukotaaniki one of the defensive mechanism adi Confirm if he is playing with musical toys only.. adi kooda lot of repetetion vundemo adagandi. Ee humming spring lo start ayinda ? Or even winter lo vunda ? his auditory proc ssing levels are low , and is recognizing / tolerating music or rhymes, he is not able to process when you call his name Good that he has some social skils, and imitation skills. Pretend play vundemo adagandi State early intervention evaluation ki appt schedule cheyymanandi Take dev ped appt soon ,cancellations vunte cheppmani cheppandi Sleep issues, food rejection vunnayemo choodandi |

get an evaluation done. also state based early intervention services untayi, they do an evaluation to find out if serviceskills are required but they won't give you the diagnosis. outside evaluation is costly and insurance may not cover it. check with insurance. hyd lo cheyincham memu. he is expensive for India levelli but baa chebuthadu |

Emc2 - read my response in between the lines.
Emc2:This long week end get to spend the time with that kid i mentioned here in another thread here are some more observations he is perfectly alright with few exceptions 1. spaking few words ,amma mumma mumma mumma mumma, baaaul, gives hi fi, hugs, he know emotions, when scolding and when appriciating, - this is good but my kid had more than 20 words y 18months and gradually lost every word within next 6 months. He was diagnosed autistic during his 2nd year well visit. he was showing emotions too contrary to what i read the kids to be detached at that time. emina tidithe he used hug and cry etc. 2. plays with the toys, he is very interested in sounds, give any toy drops on the floor and curios about sounds, if you paly kids rhymes he is dancing and exited and running all over the room, his running speed is almost equivalent to his 8yr old brother, - playing with toys is good. is he doing appropriate play is the question. for ex. they shouldn't be spinnign wheels of toy cars, repetitively playing with one thing. my kid used to pour water from one glass to the other (like chaiwala) without spilling a drop at 18 months, very reptitively- abba super anukune vallam for not spilling a drop !!! - running like that is concerning imo. 3. he is not responding to his name, but he knows we are calling for him, he looks at us and does his own things, -- not responding is a big red flag. mine used to do that. lets say he recognizes some rhymes, if you sing those he will looks at you, even from the long distance and some times comes to you some times not, -- every kid loves rhymes but autusitic kids love more of the same. can't judge one way or the other here. he recognizes who is going out who is staying at home when you dressup crys if you don't take him along with you, -- this is common in both normal and autistic kids too. if he needs something he will hold you and drag to that object, ---This is considered another BIG red flag. mine used to push/pull us to what he wants. he groups family members when he is paying out side.. only concern is not responding to his name and not speaking more than 5 words doctor suggested to join him in day care an evaluate for autism after 3 months he is not shy, interacts and gives hi fi to strangers, mall paly are lo bagane aaduthunnadu along with other kids. if his brother play recorder he does too, blabbering bane chesthunnadu, continuous, humming chesthunnadu.. these are my observations.. what do you guys think? any suggestions feed back
overall, I see 4-5 red flags. if you want please ping me on my ccdb email for more discussion. Either watching few videos of him or skype may not be a bad idea. Being around more kids will help and so does going to India. |
