Against a Roddick (greatest serve of this century) whose career was parallel with his, Fed lost 3 matches (all 3 3set matches, 1 ending in third set breaker another where Fed breadsticked Roddick in the set he won). Roddick, against a 5 year younger Djokovic, held his own more often than not. Djokovic/Agassi are better returners, but against big servers where it is counter-intuitive that having a great serve yourself also helps (in the business end of sets and tie-breaks). RF is da man. RF's return weakness is actually more like what many super talented players like Dimitrov, Gasquet and Rohit Sharma in cricket face - things are too easy for him. He is the best at hand-eye co-ordination among returners - even better than AA or Djokovic. That is another significant reason he has the totally crazy 21-3 H2H against Roddick. Where Federer loses is the second serves and lesser servers like say Nadal. Djokovic has Nadal's serves for bf, lunch and dinner - the double hand backhand helps - but the big factor is Djokovic or Agassi or Ferrer or Murray or Hewitt or even Nadal make these opportunities count. RF's returning mediocre/lesser serves is really bad. RF's returning is like Sehwag's batting - he does the tougher taks (scoring fast, dominating bowlers) superbly. The easier things - like playing defensive and leaving or playing for time is where he bungles it. Through out his career, it is the counterpunching players with mediocre serves that troubled RF. Djokovic, even in his best season 2015 lost to Karlovic and RF himself who is reliant more on serve in this decade than he was at his prime. RF's supreme serving (almost on par with Isner/Karlovic or Roddick or Raonic, when you consider an entire serve game and clutch serving) is why he troubles Djokovic more than Nadal or Murray do. Nole's problem has been mostly mental with him losing focus post RG 16. He right now is still tryin to get back to his groove and is simply not at his returning best. Kyrgios and Zverev wudnt hav had so much chance were this 2015 or early 2016. No one including RF is an exception against Big servers having a good day. Nole is still getting it back like a sputtering tubelight like the Theim match....but he is still work in progress. This is the first slump he is actually going through....He shall be back. RF and RN had it much worse for a time. Agassi wud definetely help him in loving the game again, understanding and helping him focus despite his offcourt issues, conserving the body smartly from 30s and enhancing his strengths even better. I can only imagine ROS gettin better and a more attacking style of baseline tennis. The King shall return. | ||

It is a combination of both. I remember thinking if he wins FO 2016, there's a good chance he will hit a wall with staying ruthless and so far that has proved right. I would say the off-court incidents triggered the flood and then the floodgates opened as people started sensing his taking off the foot off the pedal.... That is generally how players fall off the top, they mentally hit a wall for various reasons..... and even a 1/2 percent drop in form at the top could bring you down real fast. I actually think it is the other way. He's too grounded..... I was talking to someone yesterday and said, if Kyrgios and AZ can exchange their arrogance/humility, we will have an absolute blockbuster rivalry over the next 10 years.
great points, but I think Zverev on grass/fast (relative) courts and Kyrgios' clay (given the amount of tournaments played) evens out. I really think Thiem needs to show up better results on grass and post grass season and more importantly get his sceduling right - he plays WAYYYY too much tennis. (maybe even worse than what Davydenko used to). Kyrgios, I feel has much more game than Zverev (mostly because he is a naturally aggressive player), but the slower court and attitude difference might give Zverev more success - he has already won a Masters 1000 and Kyrgios hasn't, but GS, Kyrgios had put up better results by Zverev's age..... Nice points, but big servers have always troubled him more than RF and even Nadal. Mostly because, when it gets close like say 4-4, 5-5 and 6-6, Djokovic blinks more than the other 2 (except in 2011 and 2015). Roddick, Isner, Karlovic etc... That said, given that he didn't break Kyrgios/Zverev in 6 sets, possibly you are right, his return game needs to be shored up just that little bit! Seles - will always be the co-Greatest with whoever is any tennis fan's greatest pick (mine is Navratilova)- like Senna. Her record in the last 9 slams before her stabbing: played 8 out of the 9 slams. Finals in all 8. Won 7 out of those 8. The only final she lost - 1992 Wimbledon final - she was not allowed to scream (Navratilova/Sabatini were supportive of her regarding the screaming iirc and afaik). I feel it is the Seles curse that women today scream like banshees on the WTA. Also, Serena is the only player to win more slams than Seles among players who started their career on the WTA. As I mentioned, I have a similar concern, but I think AA is smart enough to have another person contribute technically on the serve and front court game. It, most likely, will not be the same as what BB brought, but the mental/emotional side is what Djokovic seems to be looking for.

That remains my concern on the technical side. Becker helped a lot with the serve and front court game. What AA brings, Djokovic is already good at. So Agassi's contributions will have to be more on the mental side. I was fairly positive Becker was going to take Djokovic to the next level (and boy, did he do that). With AA, I am on hold, and see how their trial period goes.
He has lot of upside and is genuinely committed to success (unlike Kyrgios who I think is the most talented of that group, but shirks from embracing responsibility that will give him the success). AZ is definitely not a false dawn, but I hope he doesn't go the Murray route - relying more on defense than offense. He needs a good coach to keep him more committed to hitting forehands (weaker wing, like Murray) and frontcourt game (Djokovic's Achilles' heel) One on One Kyrgios is the better player, but in terms of standing up to the day in day out grind of the tour, Zverev seems the better bet. Thiem - the third guy is weak on the fast courts - which can be managed (in this era of slower courts) if he is smart with his scheduling. What the executioner did after he was done with his job.
