Redclaw777:

Well put.

Also

Redclaw777:

And his final dialogue when he tells Devasena tips jump into the pyre with him is a glimpse over his twisted mind and obsession towards her.

Also, he says ' 9 nelalu kadupulo mosina vaadi kosam 25 yellu kalisi unna nannu vadilesi velthavaa?' Too much twisted and obsessed.

Savyasachi:

Sivagami's word is law of the land. And she alone has the powers to decide the next Emperor, whoever she seems fit.

Both Baahu and Bhalla act against the interests of Mahishmathi in her opinion and she has the right to change them.

Actually I too expected the same....though the flames were high.

Walking over Bhallas golden head was a different take and in the end connected it well for the same head roll to the feet of the Siva Linga....broken and defeated. In hindsight the Sivalinga started it all.

kaadu, when devasena sends back the reply in a demeaning way saying your son seems to be a chengu chaatu veerudu, that's when his ego was hurt and he calls his father just snapping his fingers and gives him the idea of captivating devasena using bahubali

Redclaw777:

But this also raises some pertinent questions. Did he defile Devasena? Or was he like Ravana who didn't touch her but only enjoyed to see her suffer? Maybe SSR didn't want to answer those questions and left it to our imagination.

chivarlo, when devasena is doing fire parikrama and the bridge is set on fire, I thought she'd walk thru it, replicating sita's agnipravesam....

7. The scene where Devasena gives a haughty reply demeaning him, he is angered but doesn't lose control but rather lets his mother do the talking. He knows the fuse has been ignited and all he has to do now is wait.

you missed a trivial here, he's the one who gives the idea to bijjala to make bahubali take devasena captive thru mother's order, this while knowing that babu is already in love with devasena... That's when he made the move to checkmate.....

Best example : Thani Oruvan (Dhruva)

Honestly, Baahubali series brought the best out of him than anyone in this film.
He was great even in part-2, Prabhas had nothing to do even in Part-2. All those praises for Prabhas are over-hyped. Bhallala deva was the best etched character in the movie.

There has been a lot of accolades pouring over for all the characters of Baahubali.

It is generally accepted that Sivagami is the most intriguing character in the series, who starts off as a just and strong willed woman who slowly becomes a grey character due to manipulation.

Anushka also had a great characterisation where she doesn't take bull $hit and believes in self respect.

But I thought one of the most layered character was Bhallala Deva's.

While his physique is so overwhelming that you are nearly awestruck when he wields that retractable chain mace of his, he is more than just than a raw powered villain.

He is the one that plays the grand chess game......and expertly at that!

Let's jst recap his cunning and intellect:

1. During the scenes where the princes are training, Baahubali declares he is going to be a King and Bhalla his Commander in Chief. There is a simple, sportive smile. Zero display of jealousy in public.

2. When Baahubali jumps off the cliff for the spy, he is almost tempted to let go but resists after seeing Kattappa. He cud hav still gone ahead and said it was an accident. But he is patient for his prey like many great villains.

3. Even when Baahubali is declared King by Sivagami, he is shown accepting gracefully.

4. In the Intro scene of The Conclusion, Bijjala is drunk and behaves like the loud mouthed a$$ that he is. He calls names and even spills out about his thirst to kill his wife and asks Bhalla on the same, eagerly expecting an accomplice to his vile thought. Bhalla expresses the same desire through his eyes but measuredly admonishes his father for such a thought.

This is a very powerful scene which dwelves into the mind of our Grand Villain. Bijjala is drunk, the men surrounding them are loyal to them, it wud hav been easy for Bhalla to let rip his feelings and feel better. But he simply doesn't lose guard. Not for a second. So much so that the great Kattappa who can 'smell' treachery from a mile is only able to smell $hit about Bhalla.

5. Similarly, Tricking Sivagami is not easy. She can see through. But, He builds such a layer around himself that she believes him in the scene where she offers him great gifts and he still says he gives a $hit the crown and she shouldn't fret over his feelings. This is a veil he has built over decades and he wasn't going to let it down jst yet. Not a pang of jealousy shown even to his mother.

6. Getting his mother to promise him Deva Sena is conceived by him. All the while knowing that he eventually still might not get her but predicting That this is the important killer move in the chess game he starts to play in the game of throne.

7. The scene where Devasena gives a haughty reply demeaning him, he is angered but doesn't lose control but rather lets his mother do the talking. He knows the fuse has been ignited and all he has to do now is wait.

8. The scene where he holds back Bijjala in the Courtroom during DevaSena's introduction is pure genius wickedness. He is so twisted that he is using his bark dog dad to bark only when he feels is the right time. He perfectly understands the importance of timing as he knows the loud mouthed Deva Sena and Baahubali shall dig their own grave meanwhile giving more weight to Bijjala's bark later.

8. The scene where he is running his fingers over this throne after getting coronated as Emperor. Jst shows how much it meant to him and a strong scene which shows that all his patience and manipulation have finally paid off and he is yet to believe the same. Soon afterwards, when Baahubali gets more accolades, he gives a knowing laugh implying that his work still isn't done yet.

9. And the grand manipulation by using Kumara Varma. This of course he gets help from Bijjala who identifies Kumara as the sacrificial pawn. He even inflicts himself a scar no less to get sympathy from the Rajamaatha. One more genius is that he talks very less in front of his mom after Kumara Varma treachery and lets his bark dog Bijjala rip.

He finally lets his pent up emotions only after Baahubali dies. After that point he doesn't hide his feelings anymore. No more hiding behind the veil. It is only from then, he lets his brawn do most of the talking. In fact, he is arguably the most powerful among all the characters in pure physical strength.

10. His feelings towards Devasena. While he was enamoured by her beauty and desired her, he first chose to use her as a pawn to destroy Baahubali. But later, he holds her captive as a symbol of dominance over her and Baahubali. So much so that he is obsessed over her being in chains and goes out into open battle without a care to get his prized possession back. Though cliched this scene is, it's a glimpse into Bhalla's mind set. And his final dialogue when he tells Devasena tips jump into the pyre with him is a glimpse over his twisted mind and obsession towards her.
But this also raises some pertinent questions. Did he defile Devasena? Or was he like Ravana who didn't touch her but only enjoyed to see her suffer? Maybe SSR didn't want to answer those questions and left it to our imagination.

There was always only one Grandmaster who was playing the game of thrones in Baahubali series. Using each and everyone character to his whim and fancy, patiently manipulating them, using them as sacrificial pawns in his quest for the throne and finally realising his dream of eliminating Baahubali and gaining his throne. To scheme against the combined might of Baahubali, Kattappa, Sivagami,Devasena, The Mahishmathi public and still come out triumphant as the sole unchallenged Emperor for 25 yrs is madness.

While the focus in the 2nd part was not much on him, there were enough scenes which depict his characteristics and attributes.

Bhallaladeva's scary combination of intellect (the gurus say both princes are equally well versed in all shastras), cunning, presence of mind, guts, sheer weapon skill and brute physical power make him one of the most compelling and complete villains we have had in our Cinema History.
