The Mahishmati kingdom, where the title character Amarendra Baahubali and his brother Bhallala Deva look to get a hold on, is equally appealing in its digital version, the creators promise. The challenge for them was to get back to an earlier age than the film’s backdrop. “While spectators will be very familiar with the characters and settings portrayed in the animated series, they would find the setting very unique. It shows the rise of the two princes, as they were young men becoming the characters that we see later on in the movies.” Their intention was to also appeal to crowds who didn’t watch the film. “Our aim was to ensure its appeal as a standalone piece of great content and a great story too.” Rajamouli’s role was more like a mentor here, working on the scripts, character designs and visual look and feel for both the graphic novel and the animated series (that’s to release later on Amazon Prime). On the animated series Baahubali: The Lost Legends (similar to the story in the graphic novel) that’s to be unveiled in the latter part of the year, Sharad mentions they are working on a series of new characters that will open a new dimension of the stories and help unearth more secrets. As excited as he is to reveal this, he is cautious to mention that not every film can translate into a successful comic book or animated series. “It’s really dependent on the amount of deep world creation that the film franchise allows for. That authenticity and the type of property are key ingredients to being able to build a successful transmedia strategy (or multi-platform storytelling), as we see with international hits such as Star Wars . The film producer, Shobu Yarlagadda at Arka Mediaworks, really made the effort to build a transmedia story property.” The Google Play store had featured their app – Graphic POP – during the graphic launch, which did its bit to take the story to a wide audience.
