For starters, I was not sure that Fed could create the magic he did - I picked Rafa in 3 sets (Along with India 4-0 over Aus and Djokovic in straights over Kyrgios, my predictions have been at an all time low) I expected Federer to start like he did, but was magical that he could keep up that insane level. Nadal, as he always does, kept pinging the backhand and that backhand kept zinging him back. When Federer plays like that, there really is nothing other players can do other than wait for him to get out of that zone. Fortunately for other players, it has been happening quite frequently since Federer has been on the wrong side of 28 (last 7+ years). Yesterday was not one of those instances. There was a certain sense of inevitability that the "lefty forehand to single-hand backhand" dynamic which helped Nadal immensely in this match-up failed for a 2nd match in a row. Nadal, as has been the case with Djokovic - who counters the left-hand forehand the best (mostly due to the greatest double-hand backhand in our game) had no way out. In a historical sense, Federer is now playing with house money - a privilege Nadal enjoyed in this rivalry for the most part. The pressure is now more on Nadal (with Djokovic almost overtaking him on most fronts) and Federer can afford to take more risks. This should help Federer till the grass courts start. After that, the pressure will be off Nadal, but also courts will be more favouring of Federer's game.... What the executioner did after he was done with his job. (4,6) Tennis Galaxy | ||

Given the stage of their careers, I doubt he can level it, but what he has proven is how the H2H is not a very reliable indicator to gauge two tennis players (particularly when there is a generation gap between them). As for winning on clay, given that AO and Indian Wells (particularly during night time) are pathetically slow, with the right conditions in Paris/Madrid/Rome/Monte Carlo, Fed will have to replicate this same level during those matches.....
