If they give an affidavit in the NGT, I don't think they can go back on it. Violating an order of the NGT can result in imprisonment of the concerned officer. However, I don't think they'd give a blanket affidavit promising to never take up the irrigation project. The Rs 35,000-crore Palamuru-Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Project was originally proposed with an aim to irrigate more than four lakh hectares of land it faced roadblocks over environmental and forest clearances A petition against the project is currently being heard at the National Green Tribunal in Chennai. Meanwhile, Telangana has suddenly come up with a twist, telling the NGT in January that it was going ahead with only the drinking water part of project for now. Dropping the irrigation component would mean it wouldn’t require environmental clearance. The tribunal has asked the state to submit an affidavit that it would not proceed with the irrigation plan. Those who oppose the project say the government may go back to the original plan once it gets the goahead on the drinking water project. |
