Dear Scorpio, No matter what hateful, backwards moves are taking place in the other Washington, I'm determined to keep our values safe and our progress secure here in Washington state. President Trump showed he will hold to his xenophobic campaign promises with a series of executive orders on immigration this week meant to build walls, not bridges. I am saddened by this news, and angry, as I am sure that many Washingtonians are. It's more important than ever to affirm who we are. And to keep fighting for everyone in our state, and everyone who seeks refuge in our state. Our diversity of people and culture makes us stronger and more prosperous. We will not be intimidated or divided. Washington will continue to be a place of open doors for refugees who are fleeing violence, because Washington is a state built on inclusion, compassion, and acceptance. And we will not stand by and allow Huskies, Cougars, and so many other young students to be turned away from their campuses and our state. They are our DREAMers and we will not allow President Trump to keep them from their dreams. Will you join me in showing President Trump that we won't give up our Washington values? We are not powerless. We will resist any attempt to reduce our nation's contribution to aiding people and families who fall victim to global humanitarian crises. Accepting refugees is part of our heritage, and we will not ignore that. Our voices matter now more than ever. Our acceptance is an act of defiance to the new administration -- and we won't let up.
