CNBC ran a special on Bernie Madoff after his first year in prison. It was very interesting.

Most of the inmates idolize him. The day he arrived at Butner there was considerable buzz around the prison. It then became a slow process of everyone trying to meet him and shake his hand, even the inmates who didn't know who he was or exactly what he did. They asked him for autographs. They gave him clothes and offered him help.

There was one occasion when Madoff was with the prisoners watching TV in one of the common areas and a special about Madoff's scam came on. Their level of respect for him increased even higher after that. Most of the guys doing time for theft stole hundreds or thousands of dollars using guns and knives. Madoff got billions of dollars using a fountain pen and pie charts. Many of these guys didn't know it was possible to steal millions, let alone billions.

Madoff also got A LOT of respect for not snitching after his arrest. http://video.cnbc.com/gallery/?v...

Inmates like him because he's smart and a good organizer. They come to him with their problems and he's good at finding solutions. Because Madoff is well-read, the guys who are trying to appeal their cases go to him for legal advice. He's no lawyer, but he can actually explain to them some of the law books that they can't understand.

He has had health problems in jail. Medication is an issue for many inmates, particularly older inmates like Madoff who are on lots of different meds. Two of the occasions in which he was hospitalized were not because he got shanked or beat up (as rumored), but because he didn't receive proper medication.
