I am the one who puts food on the table. I have all my facts right and I dont think I am misinformed in anyway. Any financial advisor will give you the same advice - Get life insurance while you are 'young'. This is covered in life/financial planning 101 I use these in my investment portfolio which earns money for me over time and also secures my loved ones in an unfortunate events (which you dont believe in). I dont want to rely on any inherited property or gofundme's support and we want to live on our own terms no matter what happens. | ||

What I said applies to the real world. If you want to imagine that one in every hundred people surfers from a crippling medical condition while continuing to be alive, then you'll have to make a McDowell Murthy world of your own and somehow ensure that the insurance companies survive. Don't forget that a good chunk of insurance premium goes towards marketing, operating expenses, profits, taxes etc. Only the remaining amount is redistributed. That's why I estimated that 99999 people losing the bet against the insurance company are required to support one unfortunate bet winner. Having said all this I never claimed that one shouldn't buy term insurance. Just get your facts right and decide wisely. For peanuts, you can secure your family in an unfortunate event (even if the chance of that happening is less than 1%). You dont have to change anything in your lifestyle to pay for this monthly premium. | ||

The fact that your friend had this unfortunate accident does not in any way concern the decision of anybody else on this DB in buying or not buying term insurance. It is simply a bet that you would incur such a rare unfortunate incident and thus receive a substantial payout from the insurance company. The payout is like a lottery payout and you have to buy tickets (pay premium) every year or so. The odds (unlike in a normal lottery where they are much better) are heavily stacked against you because insurance companies have the problem of adverse selection and high processing costs whereas normal lotteries have low operating costs and no problem of adverse selection. By adverse selection I mean the tendency of those in dangerous jobs or high-risk lifestyles to get (more) term insurance. Conversely, those at low-risk tend to buy less or no term insruance.
