Alia Bhatt can act. At a crucial juncture in the movie, she walks out of a house only to stop at the gate; look back over her shoulder and burst into tears. She cries wholeheartedly and slowly transforms into a big smile - her eyes, though, continue crying all the while. She is a class act and there is no one like her in Bollywood or any other wood perhaps in the whole wide world. That's the biggest and most important takeaway from the movie Dear Zindagi. The girl is a sheer genius. She is so gifted that everyone else simply pales in comparison. No matter how hard the role is, she simply kills it. It must be the genes. Or the torn jeans! Gauri Shinde's emotional roller coaster ride, moves at a pace of 2 inches a minute instead of covering the proceedings quickly and deftly. This is more a curse than a boon. Yes, it lets us soak in the atmosphere and understand the psych of the protagonist. It also makes us wonder if there is a end to the movie and if so, will it come before we meet our creator. Don't get me wrong. This is a beautiful movie full of amazing performances. However, the script lets it down considerably. The main conflict point of the story is so unbelievable and filmy that it is impossible to take it seriously and empathize with the characters. Alia Bhat can act. There are three sequences in the movie where she does a Highway - in a much more believable manner. The entire movie revolves around her character. Shah Rukh Khan, the shrink, plays second fiddle thankfully and let Alia hog the limelight throughout. The last act of the movie is particularly disappointing with a couple of developments you wish you didn't see as they reduce the movie to a predictable Bollywood fare. The surprise character at the end, though, completely transforms it into a true blue Bollywood masala, which is sad because the story is so fresh and unformulaic that these scenes are frankly jarring and leave a bad taste in the mouth. Did I tell you that Alia Bhat could act? Just watch the movie for her performance. This is no English Vinglish. You need a lot of patience to sit through this movie. But Bhatt makes you forget the several shortcomings of the script. Man, she can act. I like her. I really like her. There I said it. I don't know what to say more. Rating 3 out of 5. |
