# Rayalaseema #Truth behind tax benefits No, it doesn't mean people have to pay no taxes. Per my sources, it is nothing to do with personal income tax. This is only for industries that are located in these backward areas. They can avail better depreciation benefit compared to industry located in other places. In layman terms this is nothing significant, just an eyewash. Even the industry won't get waiver of income tax. They still have to pay income tax. They still have to pay excise tax. WhatsApp is not right forum to explain this. But let me attempt it anyway. Two of the biggest taxes any industry has to pay is excise and income tax. Everyone understands what income tax is. Just like all individuals, companies also have to pay income tax. Every year they declare their revenue and their expenses. The difference is the profit. Income tax is collected as a percentage of this profit. It is obvious that industry pay this tax if they make profit. If they make loss, no need to pay this income tax. Rayalaseema DIDN'T get this income tax waiver. Second tax is excise tax. This tax is generally applicable for manufacturing industries that produce physical goods. For example automobile industry pay this tax for every car they produce. Pharmaceutical industry pays excise tax for every tablet they manufacture. This tax is collected whether they make any profit or not. This is collected per item basis. Service industries such as software don't pay these excise tax. They can have some other taxes, that is irrelevant for this discussion. Rayalaseema DIDN'T get this waiver of excise tax. Major reason many pharma companies started their manufacturing in Himachal is because of this waiver of excise tax. Now you may ask what did Rayalaseema got then. It is accelerated depreciation benefit. Every industry can take this depreciation as an expense even though it is not really true expense. Depreciation is only for high cost machines etc . Let us say you start a car manufacturing plant in Rayalaseema and spend 100 crores in the machinery. Then over 20 year period you can depreciate this machinery cost. Meaning every year you can take 5 crores as expense. If you made a profit of 12 crores, that will become only profit of 7 crores after depreciation expense and you pay tax on 7 crores rather than 12 crores. If the tax rate is 25 percent your tax will be 1.75 crores rather than 3 crores. In Rayalaseema industry can take depreciation say at 10 years itself rather than usual 20 years which means your depreciation will be 10 crores compared to 5 crores for others. So your paper profit will be only 2 crores and tax will be 50 lakhs instead of 1.75 cr. So you save a bit on income tax. Bottom line is this is very very minor benefit in the larger scheme of things. This Accelerated Depreciation is not special to Rayalaseema. This is existing benefit applicable to all backward areas of the country. There are many districts in Orissa, Bihar, UP, MP, Rajasthan etc which have these backward category status. Now Rayalaseema is also added to that list of backward districts. Not a big deal. This would have been big deal if we get benefits at par with Himachal and Uttarakhand. That was what was promised by Manmohan at the time of bifurcation. BTW this was already there in the AP Reorganization act. Not a new favor BJP is giving. Excuse for long post. Want everyone to understand the difference.
