In response to your earlier post about explaining Quantum Theory in easier words and not get into a lot of tenchical jargon- i have been thinking about this. I always wanted to do be able to explain it in as simpler terms as possible, because its a fascinating subject but never could come up with an easy way. I feel that adding a bit of historical context to how we reached to Quantum theory might help. Before understanding why and what quantum theory proposes, lets how we reached there. I will try to post without getting into any equations, not just because it can get really complicated, but also I have forgot many of the details. One of my favorite quotes from arthun canon doyle's sherlock holmes is this - "When you have eliminated the impossible, whatever remains however improbable, must be the truth". Thats the most scientific way to approach to solve or understand a puzzle. That is how most theorists work. So lets start with 18th century - Towards the end 18th century our understanding of this world was primarily three branches of science, and we pretty much are aware about these thanks to hour education. 1) Mechanics - This branch analysed and predicted motion of masses, things that are affected by Gravity 2) Thermodynamics - This branch dealt on relation between heat and temperature to energy and forces 3) Electro-Magnetism - dealt with interaction of charge particles of masses. this is our main focus for now. Prior to 1850, Electicity and Mangetism were two different forces related to certain masses. but Maxwell around 1860 came up with relationship between E(lectricity) and M(agnetism). He discovered that they are both a product of charge. Charge is similar to Mass, in that it is an inherent property similar to Mass for all physical elements. Every object has charge associated with it. Mass creates Gravity, Charge creates electric and magnetic fields. It was discovered that Similar electric forces repel and opposite forces attact each other. When these charges are in motion they generate Mangetic Fields along with Electic fields. The relation is such that a moving charge(which means an electric field) produces magnetic fields. Similarly changing magnetic field produces electric fields. Ampere worked on proving electric fields producing Magnetic effects. Faraday worked on proving moving magnetic fields producing Electric effects. The reason why we need to know the above is to dive into what it means moving these fields. After considerable research by multiple scientists, it became apparent that E and M are the same force and they together produce a wave. A wave is disturbance in a medium. What it means is the medium itself is not moving, they are just being displaced by energy that is passing throuh. The charge in electric field causes disturbance in the system and generates a magnetic wave, and the change in magnetic field generates an electric wave and it goes on and on. There are few properties unique to waves - Interference, Diffraction and Refraction/Dispersion - I am sure we all remember these from our physics experiments in school. These properties are not exhibited by anything other than a wave. But here starts a trouble, while understanding how Light works. We will discuss about Light in the next post. |
