Will AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi make a surprise visit to Telangana and join the party’s fight in support of Mallanna Sagar project oustees demand of compensation as per Land Acquisition Act 2013?
Yes, say highly placed sources in the Congress party. Like in the University of Hyderabad protests during the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula, Rahul Gandhi is likely to make a surprise visit to the state and the proposed submergence villages under Mallanna Sagar project.
The state government’s crackdown on those supporting the Mallanna Sagar oustees gave the Congress the much needed ammunition to launch an agitation and it wants to take full advantage of the situation by bringing Rahul Gandhi to the state and join the agitation. Sources said senior Congress leaders received a communication from the party high command of Rahul Gandhi’s likely visit to Mallanna Sagar villages in the next couple of days.
Congress party activists organised a vanta-varpu protest at the IDA Bollaram police station after Assembly opposition leader K Jana Reddy and council opposition leader Mohammed Ali Shabbir insisted that they should be either sent to prison or to the villages facing threat of submergence due to the Mallanna Sagar project.
Both the leaders were arrested on Friday when they were on their way to Vemulaghat, one of the villages that faces submergence threat under the project, where they were stopped at Ontimamidi along the borders of Medak district.
The arrested leaders were then taken to a couple of police stations before finally being shifted to IDA Bollaram police station.
When the cops released them, they insisted, “either allow us to go to villages to be submerged under the project or send us to prison,” and stayed back in the police station. Soon, party MLAs and MLCs from Hyderabad and other places along with senior leaders Damodar Raja Narasimha, DCC president Sunitha Laxma Reddy, former PCC chief Ponnala Lakshmaiah and others rushed to IDA Bollaram police station and set up tents staging a protest in support of their leaders.
Late in the night, the Congress withdrew their protest after the High Court allowed Sunitha Laksma Reddy, Damodar Raja Narasimha and eight other leaders to visit Mallanna Sagar submergence villages.
The Congress leaders will visit Mallanna Sagar submergence villages on Saturday after giving a copy of the court order to the district superintendent of police.
